REPUBLICAN BRIEFS

The Supt Of Public Education Race Is Heating Up. Yesterday afternoon Gila Watch posted Claims About Frank Riggs'"Environmental Record" Are Flatly Wrong and Very Misleading that reads:At a recent Legislative District meeting, Frank Riggsan opponent of Frank Riggs, who is also running for Arizona Superintendent of Public Instruction, asserted that two bills co-sponsored by former Congressman Riggs "...crippled the logging industry" and "crippled the fishing industry."  The fact is that Congressman Riggs did exactly the opposite!  His bills helped those industries!  He was one of the strongest supporters in Congress of the resource-based industries and private property rights.  Because of his opposition to the extreme environmental movement, eco-terrorists targeted Riggs and even rampaged through his office vandalizing it and dragging in a tree stump and chaining themselves to it. Riggs stated, “Former Congressman John Doolittle, one of the most conservative members of Congress, was the primary author/sponsor of H.R. 3467.  His district, like mine, contained significant forestland.  I'm sure he'd be surprised to hear he sponsored legislation that "crippled" the forest products industry.  In fact, John and I, along with our colleague, Congressman Richard Pombo, led the fight to reform the Endangered Species Act.   See Enough is Enough.  For my efforts, I was labeled one of the "Dirty Dozen" by the League of Conservation Voters, Sierra Club, Wilderness League, and all the other far-left environmental groups.”

Several hours later Riggs opponent, candidate Dr. Robert ‘Bob’ Branch, responded: “Last week at the Estrella Republican Club meeting, I stated that that I believed that Frank Riggs’ co-sponsored ‘Spotted Owl’ and ‘Dungeness Crab’ Bob Branchbills helped to cripple the logging and fishing industry in CA. I stand by that statement. Today, Anita Christy, a Riggs supporter, posted “Claims about Frank Riggs'"Environmental Record" Are Flatly Wrong and Very Misleading” in her Gilbert Watch. She went on to say, ‘The fact is that Congressman Riggs did exactly the opposite!  His bills helped those industries!’ Since this is now in the public eye, I feel compelled to reply. Here are the facts from the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) on California’s crippled timber industry: (fs.fed.us/pnw/pubs/pnw)

1.      California’s forest products industry’s annual capacity to process saw-timber has decreased by nearly 70 percent, from 6 billion board feet Scribner in the late 1980s to 1.7 billion board feet in 2009.

2.      Harvests from federal timberland (mainly national forest land) declined 75 percent during the 1990s owing to numerous policy and legal constraints on timber harvesting. Private harvest was also lower in the 1990s, resulting largely from increasing state regulation of timber harvesting. Overall, California’s timber harvest volume fell sharply throughout the 1990s. At the end of the decade, local and national markets for lumber and other wood products were strong, but in-state harvest was just over 2 billion board feet in 1999—less than half of the harvest levels of the late 1980s.

In that USDA report it is stated that even though there was a strong national and local (CA) demand for lumber, harvest levels fell by 50% by 1999 (in CA).  The main reason given in that USDA report was “…numerous policy and legal constraints on timber harvesting.”  In that same report, the CA timber production is down another 15+% from 1999 to 2009.  With production down, and tens of thousands of jobs lost, that is by all accounts, a "crippled industry"; the reason given by the USDA was, “…numerous policy and legal constraints on timber harvesting.”

If Anita Christy’s claims that Riggs’ bills “helped those industries” are correct, where is uptick in the harvest of lumber in CA since that Bill went into law? Where are the new timber related jobs in CA since that Bill was signed into law? There are none, in fact, based on this USDA report, lumber production and related jobs are down substantially in CA.  The facts I cite are from the USDA (California's Forest Products Industry and Timber Harvest, 2006) and support my claims. Editor’s Note: Folks, disagareements are bound to arise as campaigns get underway… so be wise and do your own research on any and all candidates and their statements. Get acquainted with the candidates, check out their voting records and backgrounds.- ft

Editor’s Note: Please keep opinion pieces to 400 words.

Political Activist Lolly Hathhorn:  “It seems that everyone is coming out of the woodwork to run against Dr. Kelli Ward for the Flake’s senate seat.  Where were you before now?  Also, DeWit has said he will not run as long as Dr. Ward is running.  I hope he is a man of his word!  Maybe he MISSPOKE?  Why would it take for President Trump to endorse him when it seems that President Trump did endorse Dr. Ward in a roundabout way at the Prescott rally.  Maybe I did not understand it correctly.  Why not endorse Dr. Ward and not muddy the waters with everyone from McSally to Schweikert involved.  Why do Republicans always go against each other?  Can anyone out there please get some guts (and stones) and tell everyone why Dr. Ward is not qualified?!  As far as the poll that George Khalaf took, I never saw the way the question was asked as to whether one would vote for Dr. Ward or not.  I also would like to know which list of voters they got their information from.   By the way, if any of you liberals out there want to be honest, why don’t you ask yourselves ‘How many nationalities (other than Muslim) have committed terrorist attacks on people around the world.  I guess I am an islamaphobe.‘”  I only know that I am against islamist terrorists!  GOD bless America, our wonderful President Trump and our brave soldiers without whom I could not write this letter.

LD20 PC Wes Harris: The Republican Briefs has taken on a new persona which I do not believe is in the best interests of either the publican (sic) nor our two Republican groups...The MCR and AzRA. In short, it is getting a bit 'smutty' as evidenced by 11-1-17-briefs paragraphs on the very honorable Rep. Michelle Ugenti-Rita.  The comments, which I will not repeat here, were offensive to me and I am sure to Rep. Ugenti-Rita regarding an interchange between she (named) and another member (unnamed) and are not pertinent to anything that the Brief's is intended to print...in my opinion.  Additionally, whatever trouble she and her former husband Frank Ugenti are having is none of anyone's business other than those closely aligned with the family...surely not your entire distribution list. Please, in the future let's stick to the issues that this publication has printed in its long and illustrious history and stay away from rumors, innuendos and personality snipping. Editor’s Note: Ugenti-Rita recently publicly revealed that she was sexually harassed by male colleagues and has faced retaliation for reporting her experience.  A 11-1-17-briefsreader responded with links to other stories. Briefs maintains that AZ needs to clean up the home front as the public learns more about sexual harassment, child porn, deviate behavior,, etc  by powerbrokers throughout the world. 10-31-17 Briefs While this may make some uncomfortable, it will continue (business as usual) if not openly addressed. Apparently Gov Doug Ducey also thinks it’s time to get a handle on the behind the scenes shenanigans’ (smut as Harris would call it) at the lawmakers fun factory. See gov-ducey-says-more-need-to-be-done-to-end-sexual-harassment-at-the-capitol. –ft
