The women were studying on the UMOM campus, in the computer room or going to the library, which meant leaving the children or taking them with them. The tablets would make it possible to download books and do their homework in their rooms. PRWC purchased/delivered six tablets and six flash drives on Thurs Jan 14.

CONGRESSIONAL STATEMENTS

Please comply with the 300 word limit policy. If statements exceeds the limit, it will be edited.

Congressman Matt Salmon upon House passage of H.R. 3662, the Iran Terror Finance Transparency Act.“After America was fleeced by negotiations with Iran, Members of Congress warned the President that the Iranian regime was not to be trusted.  Not to be deterred by facts, he pushed forward and ultimately signed a terrible deal with an untrustworthy regime.  Since the signing of the deal just a few short months ago,  Iran has test-launched inter-continental missiles (capable of carrying nuclear payloads), fired warning shots at U.S. Naval ships in international waters, and, just yesterday, captured and held American sailors and vessels.  Now it is anticipated that the Administration will move this week to release billions in hard currency to the Iranian regime. This bill would provide Congress greater oversight over the President’s ability to lift sanctions on entities doing businesses with Iran to the benefit of their ballistic missile program, and force the Administration to take responsibility for their actions by mandating certifications be made by? Congress before sanctions are lifted.  They’re small changes, but exactly what we need to rein in an executive intent on ignoring the will of the American people.”

Legislation Introduced By U.S. Representative Martha McSally, the “Terrorist and Foreign Fighter Travel Exercise Act,” today passed the Homeland Security Committee. The legislation requires the Department of Homeland Security to conduct a “stress-test” of security gaps in America’s defenses in the wake of evolving threats from ISIS and foreign fighters. “The last time the federal government actually tested our defenses against the threat of terrorists entering our country was seven years ago. Since then, the threat environment has changed dramatically,” said McSally. “Nearly 30,000 people from over 100 countries have travelled to conflict zones in Syria and Iraq since 2011, including over 4,500 Westerners and 250 Americans. There are ISIS-related investigations happening in all 50 states. We need to know our systems in place can keep Americans safe, and where there are vulnerabilities, we need to fix them immediately.” Today’s legislation puts into action a recommendation made by McSally and her colleagues on the Foreign Fighter Task Force. The Task Force investigated the threat of ISIS for six months and released 32 key findings and over 50 recommendations in September. Since then, six Task Force recommendations have been signed into law and two more have passed the House and are awaiting Senate action. McSally has had five bills related to national security pass the Homeland Security Committee and three pass the House. Read the full bill text HERE.

Senator John McCain, Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, on Iranian Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei presenting five Islamic Revolutionary Guards commanders with the Order of Fat’h medal for detaining 10 American sailors: “It’s been three weeks since Iran’s illegal detention of American sailors in the Persian Gulf. Ayatollah Khamenei has pinned the Order of Fat’h medal to the chests of those that mistreated and humiliated American personnel. Yet the Obama Administration has still failed to condemn Iran’s behavior for what it was: a violation of international law and centuries of maritime tradition. The Ayatollah has made his views clear as to how American military personnel are to be treated. It’s time for the President and other Administration officials who incredibly have praised Iranian behavior and downplayed this incident to clarify the position of the United States, confidently affirm basic principles of international law, and protect our men and women in uniform.”

Senator John McCain on voting “yes” to an amendment offered by Senator Mike Lee (R-UT) to the Energy Policy Modernization Act that would limit the president’s authority to establish new national monuments by allowing any new designation to expire after three years unless Congress enacts legislation to make it permanent: “Today I was proud to support an amendment offered by Senator Lee that would restrict the federal government’s ability to expand its reach over Arizona lands by requiring congressional approval of any new national monument within three years in order for it to remain permanent.

“Under the Antiquities Act of 1906, the president has virtually unlimited power to restrict public use of federal land by presidential proclamation. In many cases, the Antiquities Act has been wisely employed to protect a number of Arizona’s most precious landscapes. However, in recent years, the Antiquities Act has been used by President Obama and his predecessors to ban access to large swaths of land without engaging with affected stakeholders and hearing the concerns of local communities. This is unacceptable. All Arizonans deserve to have a seat at the table before the federal government takes such actions.

“Arizona has 18 national monuments – more than any other state – that cover many hundreds of thousands of acres of land. Some of these monuments were created in the dead of night in the final days of the Clinton Administration. Yet today, President Obama is proposing a new 1.7 million acre national monument in northwest Arizona – an area roughly the size of the State of Delaware – that aims to disrupt critical activities in our state, including wildfire prevention, water management, hunting and state wildlife management, and cattle ranching.”

GILBERT/GILA WATCH

This important action comes from Jennifer Reynolds, publisher of http://arizonansagainstcommoncore.com/:

Common Core Fighters, There are two identical "Menu of Assessments" bills (HB2544 and SB1321) that will be reviewed this week in the House and Senate Education Committees. HB2544 will be reviewed on February 3rd, 2pm in House Hearing Room 4. SB 1321 will be reviewed on February 4th, 9am in Senate Hearing Room 1. Here is a brief summary of these bills. Please read them in their entirety with the links provided:
HB2544/ SB1321-The state board of education (SBE) shall adopt a menu of statewide achievement assessments to measure pupil achievement beginning in the 2017-2018 school year. The assessments provided must be of "high quality" and demonstrate that they meet or exceed the state board's adopted academic standards; that the cost to administer each assessment is not more then current assessment cost; and provide a third part evaluation of each assessment to show that it is of high-quality and meets standards. (
HB2544&Session and sb1321&Session)
These bills provide school districts and charter schools with flexibility to choose from a "menu of assessments," provided by the SBE, that they feel best matches what curriculum their district or charter school has chosen and does not lock them into just one statewide assessment, aka AzMERIT, to assess their students. Representative Boyer, the primary sponsor of HB2544 has stated, "As a teacher myself, I don't want my curriculum or any other teacher's curriculum to be driven by a test or bureaucrats in Washington, D.C. I know first hand that a single statewide test in every Arizona school does not help students or teachers."
Please contact the Representatives and Senators in both education committees through "Request to Speak" to testify in person or submit bill comments, by e-mail, and by phone and tell them to VOTE YES on HB2544 and SB1321. Here is their contact information:
