REPUBLICAN BRIEFS

sheriff richard mackLD22 Conducted A CD8 Candidate’s Forum Monday evening that has stirred up Sheriff Richard Mack’s campaign camp because Mack, who gathered the second largest number of signatures to get on the CD8 election ballot, was not allowed to participate. A press release from Mack’s campaign manager Howie Morgan, reads: “Despite Secretary of State Michele Reagan certifying 12 Republican candidates for the Special Election to replace Congressman Trent Franks in the 8th Congressional District, Republican Party elites have refused to allow the majority of the candidates onto the stage of a forum tonight in Peoria. Among those who have been denied the opportunity to be on stage is Sheriff Richard Mack, a nationally known conservative icon who won a US Supreme Court case against President Clinton over the Brady Gun Bill. Mack had the second highest number of signatures certified by the Secretary of State to be on the February 27 ballot. Sheriff Richard Mack stated,“It is outrageous that the political elite of the Republican Party still doesn’t understand why we in the grassroots cannot trust them to treat us with basic fairness. We are supposed to be the political party that is against picking winners and losers, but the Establishment just can’t help themselves. Only their crony friends with massive donors are allowed to play in what they always think is their own sandbox. Long before I was elected Sheriff, I fought to protect the Constitution from those who would seek to usurp it,” Mack continued. “I realize the political elite want to rig the system, but like President Trump we in Arizona have to ‘drain the swamp’ in the GOP as well.”Since that landmark Supreme Court ruling Mack has written six books and appeared at over 120 conservative political rallies nationwide. He has stood against the incursions of the Federal Government and has fought for civil rights from Hawaii to Bangor, Maine. He is the Founder and President of the Constitutional Sheriffs and Peace Officers Association (CSPOA) and is on the Oath Keepers Board of Directors, according to Morgan. Contact Morgan at info@SheriffRichardMack.comto schedule a presentation by Mack.

Rae Chornenky NFRW Chr 2012     Responding to Briefs questions, Monday night LD22 Chair Rae Chornenky wrote “…Indeed, there is a great deal of conflicting information being distributed about the candidate forum hosted by Legislative District 22 tonight in conjunction with other CD 8 LDs.  Unfortunately, unfounded allegations, as well as allegations based upon inaccuracies are also being leveled. In response to your questions … not all CD 8 candidates certified by the Secretary of State to appear on the special election primary ballot were invited to participate.  Initial invitations were extended to Phil Lovas, Debbie Lesko and Steve Montenegro.  Later, requests asking for responses of candidates Clair Van Steenwyk and Richard Mack as to whether they would be interested in participating were sent. There was no checklist of criteria applied in the selection of which candidates received an invitation. Neither initial invitations to candidates nor later requests for the two candidate responses (one candidate was contacted twice asking for a response) contained references to deadlines.”

NOTES FROM READERS

Editor’s Note: Please keep opinion pieces to 400 words. If extended, they will be subject to editing. – ft

Activist Francine Romesburg: LD22 Chairman Rae Chornenky‘invited’ five candidates to speak at the ‘so-called’ CD8 Candidate Forum but 7 CD8 candidates were disenfranchised. 13 candidates qualified; one dropped out leaving 12 candidates on the Feb 27 Primary Ballot.  As in past GOP candidate events, the GOP game of ‘inviting’ only Establishment Candidates was played.

Monday, Jan 8, I emailed our LD20 Chair asking who was in charge of inviting candidates.  My Chair gave Chornenky my email address. Rae emailed me that she couldn’t find Richard Mack’s contact info necessary to invite him. I immediately replied with Richard Mack’s contact info – no ‘deadline’ date given.  I received a reply from Rae thanking me for the info. Candidate petition signatures deadline was 5 pm., Wed., Jan 10 at Sec of State office. Richard qualified to be on ballot for CD 8.

Fri., Jan. 12, I spoke with Richard; asked if he received invite from Rae yet.  He hadn’t.  I emailed Rae that Richard hadn’t received invite yet. Let her know Richard and I were looking forward to Forum. Richard Mack’s Campaign Manager emailed Rae that Richard would love to attend the Forum. Rae replied she disagreed with my statement of Richard not being invited yet.  My email to Rae said I spoke with Richard who said he hadn’t been invited yet. Confusing? Made no sense to me. Richard, his campaign manager, other campaign workers were copied on all my emails.  Rae didn’t copy any of us. She apparently misunderstood a previous email. No further response from Rae. Richard emailed Rae that he would love to attend. Richard received an email from Rae that she can’t provide him the opportunity to speak because his info wasn’t received on time/only room for 5 candidates. (there was room)

Richard called a LD22 Candidate. That candidate was unaware of the Forum.  Appears Rae only contacted 5 specific candidates. Her claim of not enough room begs the question ‘what if Richard or other candidates got their info in on time. Would there be enough room for all of them to speak?  Why didn’t she contact Secretary of State for names of qualified candidates on the ballot before ‘inviting’ anyone to speak at the Forum?  In my opinion this is a complete misrepresentation of this Candidate Forum. All candidates were not represented or afforded opportunity to speak on issues.  GOP pulling old Democrat tactics- ensure only establishment candidates are heard.

Jim Raschke to Randy Miller: I think it's perfect!  Amen. See Miller commentary . 1-15-18-briefs

PCRC D7 Chairman Christina Dumal, DVM: I noticed that Karen Thomas stated that Kevin Cavanaugh lived in Florence which was CD01 1-13-18 Briefs Indeed Florence is split between CD01 and CD04 however Kevin has stated that he and his wife live in Anthem.  Yes there is an Anthem in Florence AZ.  Anthem is in CD04.  On his twitter account Kevin has listed Coolidge AZ as his location.  Coolidge is CD01.  The only listing for this particular name, Kevin Francis Cavanaugh, in the Pinal County voting records is listed as residing in the San Tan Valley, but it is unknown if this is the same Cavanaugh. When questioned about the discrepancies, he would not address them. Integrity about residency should matter to everyone. Editor’s Note: According to the Secretary of State’s office candidate Kevin Cavanaugh has withdrawn from the race. See www.Arizona.Vote/CongressionalDistrict8 to keep up with the race.

Activist Lori Deluca: The Tempe City Council meets Thursday to vote on fighting Trump and the border wall...Wait.... what? tempe-vote-anti-border-wall-resolution-joining-other-arizona-cities-opposition/

Yep, you read that right....while our crime goes up, bulk trash lines the alley’s and Tempe fails their water test, our City Council is hard at work opposing The Paris Climate Agreement, federal immigration law and now....the border wall...yes, they are fighting the border wall. The wall resolution is totally out of line for a City Council and that is coming from me, an animal activist, vegetarian and someone who spends every extra dollar and every waking minute taking care of rescue animals. They are currently gathering signatures from supporters so that they can show how many people don't want that wall so they can vote on it Thursday. Not sure what the exact purpose is, other than helping ignite the flames so they can add names to their databases for the inevitable mass wall protests. In the past year, City of Tempe's mayor Mark Mitchell has sent official statements, on City letterhead, opposing various Trump administration policies. Point being, this is not their jobs. They were voted in to represent residents on CITY issues, not federal ones. I will be attending the meeting Thursday and I encourage other to as well .If you would like to email me a letter or statement to bring, please do.  In addition, if you would like the PDF of the full resolution with background, I can email it to you. Email me at: dtberkley@cox.net And, please phone blast the following council members who voted to move this to a vote Thursday. The number to reach them all is 480-350-8110 - Mayor Mark Mitchell, Robin Arredondo Savage,  Joel Navarro,  Randy Keating, David Schapira, Lauren Kuby, Kolby Granville (voted no). LD23 Pat Shaler: I am forwarding this to the Conservatives I know to complete this survey, if interested.  The part I liked is that after the multiple choice stuff there is a place to enter text, to tell Tea Party Patriots, national, what your opinion is about the immigration issue. I’m tired of the over simplified “amnesty” v. “no amnesty” platitudes - and I believe that the immigration issue is far more complex than can be handled by bumper stickers. I know, from experience, that TPP reads these and takes them seriously, as do Congressional offices, and it is important that they hear from “the silent majority” and not just the loudest minority. I apologize in advance if I am imposing on any of you by sending this.  That is not my intent.  And, I am not presuming on your responses. My intent to help to get intelligent voices heard above the din. Personally I support a path to citizenship for DACA applicants in good standing, so I do not agree with the current TPP position.  That is why it is important that our voices be heard - so they do not presume that we all sing from the same hymnal.

Zack Taylor, Chairman, www.NAFBPO.org: What the political and social situation in Mexico brings to the United States is rarely talked about and when such information is available the reader has to dissect out what is important to understand the illegal drug situation inside the United States.  This is one of those articles when read carefully brings to light why the war on drugs inside America has been woefully ineffective for so long.  Son Of 'El Chapo' Guzman's Former Right-Hand Man Is Reportedly Talking To US Authorities, Could Be Trouble For Sinaloa Cartel Principally, that the cartels in Mexico still have and maintain their illegal drug distribution infrastructure in place inside the United States to bring the drugs from our external borders to the street level dealers in our cities.  Without political protection extended to these distribution networks through Sanctuary City Policies inside the United States and lax interior enforcement of our Immigration Laws the cartels would have a much more difficult task in maintaining these distribution networks.  The driving force fueling the illegal drug business is the pursuit of money and power.  International drug smuggling in this case is organized crime and organized crime cannot exist without political protection on either side of our borders.  DACA appears to have the potential to reinforce and expand this distribution network inside the United States.  Track the uptick in the opioid deaths inside the United States and you will see that beginning in 2009 is where the sharp increase began and continues through 2016 which is as far as the updated graphs I have seen take us.  To think and propose that increased treatment and counseling will solve this problem is deflecting the conversation away from a real solution and provides cover to the illegal drug business.

CANDIDATE COMMENTARY

Editor’s Note: Please keep opinion pieces to 400 words. If extended, they will be subject to editing. – ft

kelli ward 2018 aUS Senate candidate Dr. Kelli Ward addressing Sen. Jeff Flake's scheduled speech on the floor of the U.S. Senate, in which he plans to compare President Donald Trump to Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin: "Sen. Jeff Flake is making the rounds on television to announce that he will deliver a speech this week comparing our sitting president to a brutal dictator who killed and imprisoned millions of his own people. It is unfortunate that the retiring senator from Arizona feels he must escalate his perpetual assault on President Trump's character to such a dangerous and indecent level. If Sen. Flake does follow through and delivers this shameful and offensive speech on the floor of the U.S. Senate, it will be an utter embarrassment to Arizona and I will condemn it in the strongest possible terms. I call on all my fellow candidates running for his seat in Arizona to do the same."

Frank Riggs 4Supt for Public Instruction Frank Riggs: Here's the truth about the federal government's involvement in K-12 education which is principally a responsibility of state and local government. State funding for K-12 schools is approximately $4.3 billion, the largest item in the state budget (43% of the General Fund).  Federal taxpayer funding for K-12 education is targeted through "categorical" programs and is approximately $1.5 billion.  Those programs are for the most disadvantaged segments of the student population: low-income students who qualify for the federal lunch program, students with learning disabilities, non (or limited)-English speaking students, and Native American students. Arizona receives funding to help public charter schools with their start-up and expansion costs. Communities that include federal lands receive "PILT" payments (Payments In Lieu of Taxes) to help offset the loss of property taxes due to non-taxable federal lands within their boundaries.  Students living on military installations (or off-base military housing) or on Indian lands receive Impact Aid.  Both the PILT payments and Impact Aid payments are targeted to local school districts in those communities.

I intend to work with the Trump Administration and U.S. Education Secretary Betsy DeVos to return the responsibility, dollars and decision-making for K-12 education back to the states in a prudent manner.  As a former Congressman and Chairman of the House Subcommittee on Early Childhood, Elementary, and Secondary Education, I'm very familiar with the federal education programs and am prepared oversee that transition in Arizona. I'm the only candidate with an actual record of fighting to restore state and local control in K-12 education.  As a member the House Appropriations Committee, I helped craft legislation reducing federal funding for K-12 education (and other federal programs) in an attempt to downsize and eventually eliminate the U.S. Dept. of Education.  President Bill Clinton vetoed those bills leading to shutdowns of the federal government: shutdowns_of_1995  Unfortunately, we (the Republican majority in Congress) were unable to override Clinton's vetoes but we did force him to agree to four consecutive balanced budgets. I helped pass legislation through the House consolidating the 30+ federal education programs into a single block grant with the stipulation that 95 cents of every dollar had to be spent in the classroom (the Dollars to the Classroom Act).  I was the author/sponsor of the HELP Scholarships bill (Helping Empower Low-Income Parents), converting the largest federal education program for K-12 education (Title 1) into scholarships for the neediest families.  And I co-sponsored legislation to prohibit spending federal education funds on national testing long before Common Core. I offer a record of proven leadership based on my experience, not empty rhetoric.  see  www.riggsforaz.com
