The Maricopa County Treasurer’s Office: It is outrageous to see the mountain of misinformation provided by Rep Mark Cardenas (d) 2Mark Cardenas (D-19) in his statement regarding his opposition to SB1268. According to the Yellow Sheet Report (May 29, 2018), Rep Cardenas called SB1268 a “very flawed bill” that would have bankrupted many rural fire districts, closed firehouses, firefighters would have lost their jobs and public safety would have been compromised. Additionally, he claimed that school districts would have had their funding reduced. None of that is true; it is a complete fabrication. The funding for school and fire districts remains the same. What is even more disingenuous about Rep Cardenas’ comments is that he sponsored the exact same bill three years in a row (2016-2018) including two bills in the same year (2016). Those bills are: HB2055 and HB2299 in 2016; HB2006 in 20127; and HB2010 in 2018.

russell pearceRep Cardenas met and spoke with Maricopa County Chief Deputy Treasurer Ron Bellus, Gilbert Sch Bd canRussell Pearce many times over the past few years voicing his support for each of the respective bills, promising that he would deliver Democrat votes. Even on the day of the vote, sine die night, he told the Treasurer’s Legislative Liaison Ron Bellus that he was “good with the bill.” Then he joined all his fellow House Democrats and voted “no.”

clyde bowenRev Clyde Bowen: We of the Arizona AMERICAN African Republican Committee condemn the comments of Roseanne Barr. Her suggestion of Bestiality re Muslim Brotherhood & “Apes” is repulsive. Her inference that Valerie Jarrett is an “Ape” hybrid is beyond inappropriate. Roseanne has revealed to us how she Continues to feel. What about ism aside, our focus is on Roseanne who put her “TV family “ out of work. 200 people, Why Roseanne? Words matter, words have Power, & words can be hurtful by intention, & words have consequences. You are responsible for your speaking! When I was in Air Force, in 10 years the powerful “N” word was dropped on me by four ( separate incidents), white airmen with less than positive intentions. Each time I got my apology, they said they were drunk. I simply replied you spoke your brain, the alcohol simply facilitated your truth. I’ve been sooo drunk but never slurred another person based on tan tone, or color. Roseanne, Bill & others, in fact brought so much to many, their legacy now shrouded. America wake up! R & B, others, you let us all down. Lastly, I did “ Stand up” back in 70’s, 80’s. David Spade and I started together. I worked with Locals like Dan Horne and Michael Finney. Also old timers like Jackie Vernon, Richard Belzer, Paul Mooney (Richard Pryor’s writer). Roseanne that was NOT funny!

MARK CARDENAS: LIAR. LIAR, PANTS ON FIRE!

Mark Cardenas (d) 2Is there something in the water Democrats drink that makes them lie so often and so blatantly?

In January 1998 Democrat Bill Clinton said: “I did not have sex with that woman.” In June 2009 Democrat Barack Obama said: “If you like your doctor, you can keep your doctor.” And just this month, May 2018, our own Democrat member of the Arizona House of Representatives Mark Cardenas said: “Public safety would have been compromised.” He also said, “Firehouses would have closed, firefighters would have lost their jobs . . .” And what was the reason these catastrophic, even apocalyptic events, would have occurred if it wasn’t for the foresight of one Mark Cardenas? According to Cardenas, as reported in the Yellow Sheet Report (YSR) (May 29, 2018): Passing SB1268, the Senior Citizen Tax Relief Act.

Here’s the silliest part of Cardenas’ lies: Cardenas was the prime sponsor of the House version of SB1268 for three consecutive years. In 2016, Mr. Cardenas was the prime sponsor of HB2055 Class Six Property; Elderly Homeowners. And he apparently hated this bill so much he sponsored an identical bill, HB2299 Class Six Property; Elderly Homeowners that same year. In 2017, Cardenas was the prime sponsor of HB2006 Elderly Homeowners; Class Six Property. And just this year, 2018, Cardenas was the prime sponsor of HB2010 Elderly Homeowners; Class Six Property. All three years; all the same bill—four of them.

What changed? The radical #RedforEd movement pressured Democrats (they didn’t need a lot of pressure) to vote against any bill that even closely resembled a tax cut—even for low-income seniors who could lose their homes and be thrown out on the street.

Yes, folks, we were facing the end of civilization as we know it; the state of Arizona would have been nothing but a piece of burnt toast if wasn’t for the failure of SB1268. Cardenas claims that the bill “would have bankrupted many rural fire districts by reducing the funding they could receive through override elections.”

The facts are that the levy, what the amount of property taxes would be collected in the various fire districts, would remain the same. At most, there was going to be a minor shift in tax liability, but the funding would remain constant, unless, of course, the fire districts themselves can’t manage their money properly. And if that’s the case, why would you vote for an override and give them more money to mismanage?

And according to YSR, Cardenas also claimed “that SB1268 would have also reduced funding to public schools through lower property tax valuations.” Same rules apply to school districts as to fire districts.

These nonsensical reasons to oppose giving low-income seniors a break on their property taxes have been discussed in the American Post-Gazette, MCRC Briefs, in other media and, of course, at the Capitol, a number of times over the past three years. And they are just that—nonsense, lies perpetrated by Kevin McCarthy and ATRA. The levies remain the same; school and fire districts would continue to get the same funding; schools would not close; no firehouses would close; no one would lose their job (except hopefully lying politicians and lobbyists); and the world would continue on its normal course. Well, except for those low-income seniors who are now at more risk of losing their homes; but who cares about some old, poor person being forced out of their home? -J. Madison

CANDIDATE COMMENTARY

Editor’s Note: Please keep opinion pieces to 400 words. If extended, they will be subject to editing. Opinions expressed below are not necessarily those of the Briefs. Briefs does not endorse candidates, nor does it post endorsements. – ft

baronessCD9 candidate Irina Baroness von Behr: Yesterday I turned in my signatures and qualified for the Republican Primary ballot here in CD9. I knocked on over 12,000 doors and want to thank everyone who signed my petition. I met a lot of kind and wonderful people in my district. I made a lot of new friends and really appreciate everyone who invited me into your homes for coffee or water, and really enjoyed how your pets greeted me with such love and enthusiasm. I also loved having my picture taken with you and your children. Please send those to me so I can post on my website and facebook page. Most of all, I want to thank all of you who took the time to talk with me and share your thoughts and concerns. May God bless you all! I also want to congratulate Dr. Ferrara, Mr. Leibsohn, and Mr. Giles, who have also worked hard to qualify for the primary. I commend all of you gentlemen and look forward to engaging with you in a noble fight on August 28th. May the best candidate win!

Ken Bennett - 2015Gubernatorial candidate Ken Bennett: I am running to be the Governor of Arizona and I want the people to know where I stand. For days the media reports that Governor Ducey is appointing Cindy McCain to John McCain’s seat.

· “Cindy McCain Set to Succeed Husband in Senate”

· “ … no one in the Grand Canyon State who spoke to us wants to go on record discussing what will happen when the ailing McCain no longer holds his seat. But those who did, agree almost unanimously, Cindy McCain following John in the Senate through appointment by Gov. Doug Ducey, R-Ariz., is a near certainty.

· "… I've always assumed that was the arrangement … "

· "… I don't know if this [succession] has been formalized, but that's what people who know John tell me… "

I want Arizona to know that I will not appoint Cindy McCain to the U.S. Senate as the Arizona Governor.  John McCain’s ‘thumbs down’ is the reason we still have Obamacare and his wife will vote the same way.  And Governor Ducey told him to do it. Obamacare is a job killer and hurting small businesses in Arizona and it needs to be repealed.  I thank Senator McCain for his service to this country and have the highest respect for the sacrifices he has made, but I am running to be the Governor of Arizona and am not afraid to make tough decisions. I will use the position of Governor to rid us of Obamacare however I can.

Who would I appoint?  The person who will vote ‘thumbs–up’ on repealing all of Obamacare, and who displays a clear record of being pro-life, pro-second amendment, is committed to securing the border and who will support helping Trump make NAFTA a ‘Fair Trade’ deal. I find it interesting that Ducey does not deny the media reports that he plans to appoint Cindy McCain but his people sure do have a lot of nasty things to say about me.  I do not believe that telling you the truth is indecent, nor shameful because I believe that you have the right to know what my priorities will be as your Governor. Full thread on twitter.

rene lopezChandler City Council candidate Rene Lopez: Great news! I filed more than enough petition signatures with the Chandler City Clerk’s office, and am now qualified to appear on the ballot. Thank you to all my friends and supporters who helped me accomplish this task, and thank you especially to the hundreds of Chandler voters who signed in support of my re-election campaign. After meeting with many Chandler voters, it was clear that they were proud of the terrific track record of our City government, and want Chandler to continue its history of being one of Arizona’s best-run cities. chip in A donation of any amount would be appreciated and will go a long way to help me reach many more Chandler voters and continue its success for the next four years. Thank you.

Frank RiggsSupt of Public instruction candidate Frank Riggs: May has been a fantastic month for the campaign and I’m counting on you to help us keep up the momentum and finish the month strong. In the past 30 days, we’ve turned in our petition signatures from over 7,500 Arizonans, I’ve logged 13,000 miles meeting voters across the state and I’ve even had the honor of delivering two high school commencement addresses. chip in Early voting starts in 60 days, and the campaign is picking up momentum as the election season (and weather!) really starts to heat up. We’ll be putting up our campaign signs soon and your contribution will help us cover every part of the state.

Ken Bennett - flagGubernatorial candidate Ken Bennett: We are on the ballot!  Thank you Arizonans for your incredible effort in securing not only the required number of signatures to make me a candidate for Governor for Arizona but a cushion of 26%  I am humbled by your support and inspired that Republican issues still win in Arizona.  I am running because the truth matters and we are not being told the truth in critical areas.  My primary opponent, Governor Ducey, has forgotten that this is a Republican state and is caving to outside interest groups on gun control, outrageous budget spending, NAFTA, DACA, and Obamacare.

I am an effective Republican and will fight for our shared values.  I look forward to spending the coming months meeting and talking with you on how the budget can be structurally balanced and how important Arizona is for President Trump’s priorities of securing the border and fair trade.  As for Obamacare, when I say I don’t like it I mean all of it, so I will tell our AZ Senators to give a ‘thumbs up’ on the repeal!

Arizona has always been my home and my community ties are deep, so I will see you in our neighborhoods and answer to you, not just to get your vote but to live with the results of the decisions I make as your next Governor.  Let’s keep AZ ‘red’ because Ken Bennett ran on Republican principles. Here are the next steps:  Sign up to receive updates that you can share with your databases.  Give $5. Donate up to $160. It is time to get to work. Help me drain the swamp – in Arizona.

Kelli Ward - physician 2US Senate candidate Dr Kelli Ward: My opponent Martha McSally 3Martha McSally has a major supporter backing her campaign... his name is Mitch McConnell. And it didn't take long for Mitch McConnell to announce his support for McSally since he decided early on that he would never endorse me and my America First campaign for U.S. Senate. In fact, within hours of Fake Jeff Flake announcing his decision to step down, McConnell's SuperPAC released this defiant statement about our campaign: "Kelli Ward will not be the Republican nominee for this Senate seat in 2018."

Now, to be fair, I wasn't expecting to be popular with McConnell and the D.C. Establishment... but seeing such an immediate attack against our campaign was pretty shocking. However, despite McSally's endorsement from McConnell, I have drawn more top conservatives behind my campaign than anyone else in this race. These endorsements have McConnell, the D.C. Establishment, and my opponent McSally shaking in their boots!
They've heard our rallying cry to "Drain the Swamp" and put America First! And they see that we are organizing and gaining more momentum with each passing day.
Can I count on you to chip-in and declare your personal endorsement of my race today? Tonight is the final cutoff for May fundraising and we are getting close to raising our final $25,000 for our next report.
Thanks to folks like you I'm running first place in this important race, leading McSally by 9 points... and this is without the support of D.C. powerbrokers like McConnell. That's why I'm counting on you to
CHIP INto help me cross the finish line in this important election. hanks for standing with me.
