Candidate Commentary

Secretary of State Steve Gaynor: Secretary of State Michele Reagan, Arizona’s Chief Elections Officer, has once again violated state disclaimer laws. Yes, not once, but TWICE, the elected official in charge of making sure candidates follow campaign laws is not properly following the laws within her own campaign. No wonder the Republican Attorney General found her “incompetent” on other related election matters. Earlier this year, Secretary Reagan’s website was out of compliance with Arizona Revised Statutes 16-925.  Her campaign website had the wrong disclaimer until my campaign pointed out her error; it was fixed days later.  Now, Secretary Reagan’s campaign is displaying signage that breaks the very same statute. According to A.R.S. 16-925 any advertising and fundraising disclosure statements need to include:

The words “Paid for by”, followed by the name of the person or committee making the expenditure for the advertisement or fundraising solicitation.

Whether the expenditure was authorized by any candidate, followed by the identity of the authorizing candidate, if any.

Reagan campaign signs are missing “Authorized by”.  The signs do include a “Paid for by Vote Reagan 2014”, however that is not the committee that placed the sign.  Vote Reagan 2014 was terminated by her office on 10/3/2016, making the disclaimer wrong and in clear violation of A.R.S. 16-925. Reagan campaign sign at Hwy 60 and Higley Road

Despite being the Chief Elections Officer of Arizona, Secretary of State Reagan (no relation to President Ronald Reagan) shows either a disregard for campaign laws or a lack of understanding. Either way, her campaign’s actions are unlawful. Arizona deserves better.
