Frank Sinatra Considered Kate Smith The Best Singer Of Her Time, and said that when he and a million other guys first heard her sing God Bless America on the radio, they all pretended to have dust in their eyes as they wiped away a tear or two. Kate Smith Introduces God Bless America shows the very first public singing of God Bless America. But before you watch it you should know the story behind the first public showing of the song.
The time was 1940. America was still in a terrible economic depression. Hitler was taking over Europe and Americans were afraid we'd have to go to war. It was a time of hardship and worry for most Americans. This was the era just before TV when radio shows were HUGE and American families sat around their radios in the evenings, listening to their favorite entertainers and no entertainer of that era was bigger than Kate Smith. Kate was also large; plus size, as we now say, and the popular phrase still used today is in deference to her; "It ain't over till the fat lady sings." Kate Smith might not have made it big in the age of TV but with her voice coming over the radio, she was the biggest star of her time.
Kate was also patriotic. It hurt her to see Americans so depressed and afraid of what the next day would bring. She had hope for America, and faith in her fellow Americans. She wanted to do something to cheer them up, so she went to the famous American song-writer Irving Berlin (who also wrote White Christmas) and asked him to write a song that would make Americans feel good again about their country. When she described what she was looking for, he said he had just the song for her. He went to his files and found a song that he had written but never published, 22 years before - in 1917. He gave it to her and she worked on it with her studio orchestra. She and Irving Berlin were not sure how the song would be received by the public, but both agreed they would not take any profits from God Bless America. Any profits would go to the Boy Scouts of America . Over the years, the Boy Scouts have received millions of dollars in royalties from this song.
This video starts out with Kate Smith coming into the radio studio with the orchestra and an audience. She introduces the new song for the very first time and starts singing. After the first couple verses, with her voice in the background, scenes are shown from the 1940 movie, You're In The Army Now. At the 4:20 mark of the video you see a young actor in the movie, sitting in an office, reading a paper; it's Ronald Reagan. To this day, God Bless America stirs our patriotic feelings and pride in our country. Back in 1940, when Kate Smith went looking for a song to raise the spirits of her fellow Americans, I doubt whether she realized just how successful the results would be for her fellow Americans during those years of hardship and worry...and for many generations of Americans to follow. Now that you know the story of the song, I hope you'll enjoy it. – Author unknown
Yesterday Morning, In Da Nang, Vietnam, President Trump participated in a meet-and-greet with Vietnam War Veterans. The President expressed his gratitude for their service to the United States, and reaffirmed his commitment to honor the sacrifice of all Veterans and rebuild our military. After giving remarks, President Trump signed a proclamation to honor the veterans of the Vietnam War, part of an ongoing 13-year commemoration of their sacrifice for freedom. “Our veterans are a national treasure, and I thank them all for their service, sacrifice, and patriotism. To each of you with me today, you are the heroes who fulfill your duty to our nation. And each of you, under the most difficult conditions, did what you had to do, and you did it well,” President Trump said. Read the President's full remarks here.

Trey Terry of Litchfield Park has filed campaign paperwork and is running for the LD13 Senate seat that is being vacated by Steve Montenegro for his run for Secretary of State. Terry is a conservative Republican who is dedicated to limited government and free enterprise. He says he will make Arizona’s economy and education a priority in his campaign. “I am running for the State Senate because I believe it is time that my generation takes responsibility for its future. LD13 needs a conservative State Senator dedicated to serving and representing its constituents,” said Terry. “As a combat veteran, I will not sit on the sidelines. I will work to improve Arizona’s economy and education while giving my district the honorable representation it deserves.” Terry is a 2005 graduate of Millennium High School in Goodyear. Terry joined the United States Army as a Cavalry Scout in 2005. After spending a year stationed along the DMZ in Korea, he was assigned to Fort Hood, TX where he later deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. He spent over one year in Iraq where his recon platoon performed over 100 time-sensitive raids to capture high-value targets with a 91% success rate. He helped capture senior leaders of Hezbollah, Al-Qaeda in Iraq, and local Iranian-supported militia insurgents, dismantling their operational capacity in the Baghdad region. Since Terry was honorably discharged from the Army, he has fought to elect conservative candidates to local, state, and federal office. Terry has also fought to advance specific conservative issues. He has supported the pro-life March for Life as well as Second Amendment groups opposing gun control. Trey and his wife Elise live in Litchfield Park where he attends Trinity Lutheran Church. He was a LD13 PC when he lived in Goodyear. He moved to Litchfield Park last year and plans to become a PC again soon. Contact: 623-208-9719

Editor’s Note:Please keep opinion pieces to 400 words.
Activist Wil Howarth: The NFL has announced they will not require their players to stand for the National Anthem. They say they aren’t political yet the players are making a political statement and desecrating the memory of those that have fought and died for the flag and country. On this Veterans Day weekend we need to send them a message. Respect for the flag and anthem is more important than their statement-of which I have heard at least 3 versions already. If you belong to a fantasy football league, put it on BYE for this week. I did our league , it’s easy just have league manager go to tools, edit settings , week 10 and check each team individually and set to bye. I have heard from several dozen leagues that are doing this and the more that do the more the NFL will feel our words. Also turn off the NFL this weekend, when ratings are down that makes noise also. As a veteran I speak for those that no longer can. THANK YOU. The more people involved; the more impact we make.
Arizona AMERICAN African Republican Committee chairman Rev Clyde Bowen: Thank you to all active and former military service men and women, and especially their supportive spouses and families. Thank you to the children who endure and the wives who wait. Your loved Warriors are away for you and for us. This is so much your day too. Service personnel, Patriots, Americans & your families. The AAARC is in your debt.
Activist Ross Manes: One thing has been said in support of gun control with which I totally agree. We don’t need the military style semi-automatic weapons. In fact, following that line of thought, we don’t need any type of firearm. At this time there is no declared war in our country, and we have the various law enforcement agencies, who can be there in minutes when seconds count, to protect us. And, of course, we don’t need to shoot any of our food now. There’s always someone willing to kill it for us, and sell it to us. No, we don’t need semi-automatic firearms, and God help us if, sometime in the future, we do need them and don’t have them.
Tom Morrissey, Past Chairman AZ GOP: It is no secret that when I was Chairman of the Arizona Republican Party one of my staunchest allies was Sheriff Joe Arpaio who stood strong with me against not only the Democrat open borders philosophy shared by the Establishment Elite within our party and also the Chambers of Commerce. My alliance with Sheriff Arpaio did not begin when I assumed the Chair, rather, it began in an earlier time when I was the Chief Deputy US Marshal for the Federal District of Arizona. We worked side by side in those days when our southern border security actually meant something. It was during that time that I became aware of someone who rose to the eventual rank of Chief Deputy Sheriff to Sheriff Arpaio, one Gerry Sheridan. I knew him to be an outstanding law enforcement officer who showed himself to also be a dynamic leader within the MCSO as Sheriff Joe's right hand. He quietly went about his duty with little fanfare and got a big job done, day in and day out. I am always on the lookout for potential candidates for office who are true Conservatives and with that thought constantly in mind, I can't help but call your attention to Past Chief Deputy Gerry Sheridan and my belief that he would make an excellent Sheriff and should be encouraged to run for that office in Maricopa County. Let me be clear, if Sheriff Arpaio was running, he would have my utmost support. But if he isn't running, then I suggest we encourage a TRUE Republican CONSERVATIVE Gerry Sheridanto run. I can't think of anyone better suited for this office.
Arizona Town Crier Jim Ehl: Arizona Republican Assembly (AZRA) President Jim O’Connor, one of our most active activist is running for the Arizona Corporation Commission (ACC). He has volunteered full time as an AZGOP Member at Large, Legislative District Chairman, Member of Maricopa County Executive Guidance Committee, Presidential Elector for Trump/Pence, and was acandidate for AZGOP State Party Chairmanship. With his experience and background , O’Connor believes he can improve the ACC. ACC was established to serve WE THE PEOPLE, and since O’Connor has worked hard to serve WE THE PEOPLE, rather than relying on ‘deep pockets’ to qualify for the ballot, O’Connor has chosen to rely on WE THE PEOPLE for whom he plans to serve to help qualify him as a Clean Elections Candidate. He filed to run as a Clean Elections Candidate in the 2018 Republican Primary. To qualify for the ballot he must meet two State imposed criteria. See http://apps.azsos.gov/equal/
· First, he must collect approximately 8,000 nomination petition signatures from Independent and Republican registered voters statewide. Please sign the online petition.
· Second, he must collect 1,800 five dollar ($5) qualifying contributions from registered Arizona voters of any party. These will be paid to the Arizona Clean Elections Fund. Please make your $5.00 contribution on the Secretary of State’s website.
There are two links you need to click. For each link, you will need to enter your driver’s license, birthday and then scroll down to James "Jim" O'Connor under Corporation Commission. You can make your $5 contribution using a credit/debit card or using a PayPal account. $5 contributions may also be made in cash or by check. However, any cash or check (payable to O’Connor 4 Corp Comm) must be accompanied by completion of the form above and mailed to Jim O’Connor, 8001 E DelJoya Drive, Scottsdale, AZ 85258.

CANDIDATE COMMENTS
US Senate candidate Kelli Ward: The Senate has once again done what we have come to expect: Fail to deliver for the American People and capitulate to the Swamp. Of course, I'm referring to the Senate's decision to break with President Trump by delaying corporate tax cuts to 2019... President Trump made it known that corporate tax cuts were to be among Congress'first priorities when creating tax reform legislation. The Senate's action today is a clear reminder that we need bold, principled and effective leadership in DC.
Unfortunately, it gets worse... the Senate's decision to "kick the can down the road" on corporate taxes isn't the only bad news coming out of their chamber today. As it turns out, the Senate's "tax reform" bill leaves Obamacare's individual mandate "tax" unchallenged. Strike two. Obamacare's individual and employer mandates represent the worst of big government coercion and should be opposed... Senators should be following Rand Paul and Ted Cruz' lead in pushing for repeal. All of this proves we need more leaders with strong backbones and firm principles to stand with President Trump for the American People on these important issues.
