REPUBLICAN BRIEFS

Condolences To The Family To Jerry Baker(Alice Lara’s father in law), who passed away Thanksgiving night at age 89. Baker was a Korean War photographer.

Congrats To Al Melvin’s Parents who have been married for 75 years.

Thanks to President Donald Trump, it’s ok to call your Christmas event a Christmas Party instead of a ‘Holiday’ gathering this year. – ft

Readers Are Welcome To Submit their Republican Christmas party, meeting, activities photos to Briefs for consideration for posting. Be sure to identify those in the photos, left to right. And give the photographer credit. - ft

Over The Thanksgiving Weekend, there seemed to be confusion over how to submit Maricopa County Republican Committee “member-at-large” nominations for the five openings on the Executive Board that will be voted on at the Jan 13, 2018 Mandatory meeting.  MCR Chairman Chris Herring has informed Briefs, “There is not a form” for submitting nominees.  Herring said to send an email to (1)Aaron Flannery, the nominations chairman at aleeflannery@gmail.com and (2) Herring at chris@maricopacountygop.org letting them know that you want to be considered a nominee is all that is necessary. The deadline to have names considered for ballot printing is 11:59 pm on Dec 2, 2017. Members-at-large are voting members of the Executive Guidance Committee. They do not have a specific list of duties, they serve the board's strategic needs as determined by the chairman at any given time. Editor’s Note.  Briefs suggests nominees also send a copy of their announcement, along with a head/shoulders photo to repcomm@cox.net or frostytaylor@cox.net for posting in the Briefs so precinct committeemen have time to learn a little about the nominees are before Jan 13, 2018 Mandatory Meeting election.  –ft

Maricopa County Republican Precinct Committeemen need to mark their calendars for the Jan 13, 2018 MCR Mandatory Meeting. THE AZGOP Mandatory meeting is Jan 27, 2018. Details tba for both meetings.

Editor’s Note: Please keep opinion pieces to 400 words.

wes harris 3LD20 State Committeeman Wes Harris has announced his candidacy for the position of Maricopa County Republican Member-At-Large. Harris said, “As a sitting Member At Large for the Maricopa County Republicans I see the election in 2018 as one of the most important elections in our time and one that I want to be in a position of helping Republicans throughout the County win the contested seats.  Being a Member at Large gives me a position that transcends Legislative District boundaries and enables me to be more effective in helping further the cause as stated in the Republican Platform.  So that I may continue with this work, especially with the Board of Supervisors of Maricopa County, I wish to again place my name in nomination as a Member at Large. There are two things that a Precinct Committeeman do which are their primary duties.  The first is to promote Republican Candidates duly vetted running for office.  The second, and most difficult, is to hold elected representative accountable to We the People and the Republican Platform.  It is the latter area that our PCs fail miserably to preform and is the area that I wish to pursue as a Member At Large both doing and encouraging my fellow PCs to engage our elected Representatives while they hold those elected offices. Editor’s Note: Harris is a Republican P.C., Precinct Capt.', State Committeeman, MCR Member at Large and Treasurer National Federation of Republican Assemblies. He can be reached at 602-432-2871 wwharris@msn.com

PC Barbara Medal: The Republican County Chairman seems to not always have the facts correct nor does he care about the people he represents i.e. the Maricopa Precinct Committeemen. First off all, Maricopa is not the largest county in the nation - it is the fourth largest county. But that error is insignificant compared to the fact that Chairman Herring actually announced at the last MCRC meeting that questions and statements are not allowed by any guests attending the meeting. As a PC, SC and former officer in my district as well as county appointed Sergeant At Arms, I am appalled that we can no longer be acknowledged at these meetings. I have been attending these meetings since 2009. In all those years any Republican PC or registered Republican could speak, ask questions and expect an answer from the county exec committee who I might add, are voted to their offices by us, the PCs.

We are supposedly a bottom up organization yet our voices have been deliberately silenced at all levels. There has also been the deliberate shutout of some Precinct Committeemen who have served as PCs for many years with applications being buried and/or ignored.  This despicable practice must be stopped or we lose our Party to those that align with the likes of McCain, Flake and the many like them who would rather see a Democrat in office than a true constitutional patriot.

Another tactic is the practice of sending snail mail literature, paid for by people without scruples who marginalize PCs in contested precincts or place moderate PCs in empty precincts and consequently take over the Party and control the elections of state committeemen by placing ghost PCs or people just like them to fix the outcome. For all reputable state committeemen it is time to come together and hold those in leadership accountable they are not put in office to control us but to serve us. Show up in January and vote for the reputable Party leadership and let your voice be heard. Proxies are a big problem in the hands of the corrupt and not supposed to convenience people who would rather just stay home. In Liberty if we can keep it.

AZRA Chairman Jim O’Connor: A big thank you for all the work you do for us. May God bless you with His continuing presence in your life,

Maricopa County Board of Supervisors Bill Gates: As we approach Thanksgiving, it is a reminder to reflect upon all we are thankful for. I am thankful for my beautiful wife, my two amazing daughters, and the time I get to spend with family and friends. I am also thankful to serve as your Maricopa County Supervisor. It is a honor to represent one of the best counties in our great country. Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours.

Talk Show Hostess Alice Lara: Thank you Frosty for your devotion to getting the word out! HAVE A BLESSED THANKSGIVING!!

PC PJ: And, again, Happy Thanksgiving. We all have thanks for you and your tremendous contribution to the Republican cause!!

PC Irene Littleton: Good Morning, All of you have played a part in my life and helped me grow. I appreciate all of you whether here or far away. That is why I am thankful to all of you. I wish you all a very Happy Thanksgiving to you and your families! God Bless you all!

DNC update: "The Democratic National Committee's fundraising woes continued last month, when the party posted its lowest total for the month of October in at least 15 years.
"The DNC raised $3.9 million in October -- far short of the $9.2 million raised during the month by the Republican National Committee.
"The RNC has now raised $113.2 million over the 2017 calendar year and has $42.5 million in the bank and no debt. The DNC, meanwhile, has raised $55 million this year. It has $5 million cash on hand and owes $3.2 million in debts.
"It was the worst October for Democrats dating back to 2003 -- the first year the national parties were required to file monthly finance reports. The low totals reflect the difficulty the DNC has had raising money since former President Barack Obama left office.
"But the DNC under new chairman Tom Perez has remained a source of friction, with Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders'backers -- including Our Revolution, the political organization that grew out of his 2016 campaign -- remaining critical of its role.
"Early this month the DNC fired its finance director, Emily Mellencamp Smith, whose hiring was announced in June as part of new chairman Perez's efforts to rebuild the party." Read More,

ELECTED OFFICIAL COMMENTS

Steve Chucri, District 2 Maricopa County Board of Supervisors: Let us take this time of Thanksgiving to pause and reflect on our blessings, including our cherished family and friends. I am deeply honored and thankful for the opportunity to serve the people of Maricopa County.  As this year comes to a close, I look forward to the New Year and many opportunities that lie ahead. May you enjoy a bountiful Thanksgiving.

Phoenix City Councilman #6 Sal DiCiccio: Starting today, the City will begin replacing all of our street lights with LED bulbs. This project, which will be completed by the fall of 2019, will save the city around $22 million through 2030. Most work on residential streets will be done during daylight hours on weekdays and our major streets will be worked on overnight. You may notice some minor sidewalk and curbside parking restrictions while crews are working, but multiple crews will be deployed throughout the city simultaneously to ensure that the impact is minimal and the work is completed as quickly as possible.

Phoenix City Councilman #6 Sal DiCiccio: You may have heard some rumblings about the proposed new luxury apartment complex, Alta Marlette, being discussed. The developer, Wood Partners, has submitted plans for two buildings housing 245 high-end units just off of 7th Street at Marlette. While this proposal has generated a fair bit of controversy, this is just the tip of the iceberg. More battles are coming. Phoenix is continuing to grow at a ferocious rate, and that growth has to go somewhere. Younger home buyers and renters don’t want to be 45 minutes outside of town, don’t want to spend their weekends working in the yard, and don’t want to be stuck living in struggling areas. They’re looking for apartments and condos with high end amenities, and prime locations – like the ones Wood Partners builds. In fact, Wood Partners’ similar projects elsewhere around the Valley have an occupancy rate in excess of 95%. That’s astounding, and indicative of how much demand there is in this segment. Unfortunately, that demand often creates conflicts like the one we’re seeing play out now. Upscale single family neighborhoods in and around the City center are feeling the squeeze, and worried these developments will take away from their quality of life. While I think those worries are mostly overblown (neighbors tend to be pleased with these projects once they’re completed), they are still very legitimate. So far the project has come up in front of Council twice – and been deferred both times. The developer and neighborhood opposition have been given until Dec 13th to come to an agreement, and we very much hope they are able to do so. But no matter how this particular case is resolved, this is a battle we are going to see play out again and again in coming years.

Phoenix City Councilman #6 Sal DiCiccio: Recently, Fox 10 reporter Kari Lake alerted us to a developing story in Arcadia. One of our residents, Lee Sepanek, known throughout the area as “Christmas Lee” was told by City of Phoenix staff that the amazing display of Christmas lights he’s been putting on for over 30 years now would be shut down due to a couple of complaints. City staff didn’t even bother to alert our office before meeting with Sepanek. That alone was wrong. But trying to shut down Christmas? Totally unacceptable! As soon as the story broke, our office was there to meet with Sepanek, then arrange follow up conversations with City staff to ensure that Christmas Lee and his lights can continue to shine for as long as he’s willing to keep the spirit of Christmas alive. Unfortunately, that won’t happen this year. Lee typically spends two full months putting together his display, and after being told by the City that he would be doing all that work only to likely get shut down, he decided it wouldn’t be worth the risk. Our office even offered to gather volunteers to assist, but it was too late. There is a bit of good news, however: Lee couldn’t quite abandon the Christmas spirit entirely, and his lights are now decorating several other houses in the neighborhood – just one more reminder of how we can all use the holidays to come together in celebration, no matter how we choose to celebrate. And Lee says the display will be back on next year – and better than ever!
