AzCDL Legislative Action Alert:The Republican leadership in the Legislature is showing an increasing reluctance to allow pro-rights firearms bills to be scheduled for floor votes. One of these, HB 2535, passed out of the House Judiciary and Public Safety committee on February 14, followed by passage out of the House Rules committee on February 19. The next step for HB 2535 is a House Committee of the Whole (COW) hearing, which can only be scheduled by the House Leadership. HB 2535 would prohibit the Department of Child Safety (DCS), a child welfare agency or a governing board of a child welfare agency from adopting, implementing or enforcing a rule or policy related to the possession, transfer or storage of a firearm. Under current DCS rules, in the case of foster care homes and facilities, firearms must be unloaded and locked away at all times and, in some cases, banned altogether. So much for your "right" to keep and bear arms if you wish to foster or adopt a child. It is important to show the legislature that there is support for HB 2535 and your legislators need to encourage the Leadership to remember their constitutional duty is to protect the rights of individuals. Commissioner Andy Tobin attended the ITC Holdings Corp. extensive stakeholder meetings held in Prescott yesterday and will attend the meeting scheduled between 3-5 pm., today in Phoenix. The Big Chino Valley Pumped Storage Project is a state-of-the-art 2,000 megawatt (MW) pumped hydro energy storage facility planned in Yavapai, Coconino, and Mohave counties that is anticipated to greatly boost our state’s energy security and resilience. Earlier this month, Tobin proposed the comprehensive Arizona Energy Modernization Plan which includes a target of 3,000 MW of energy storage operating in the state by 2030. The Big Chino Valley Pumped Storage Project would bring Arizona’s total energy storage capacity to 2,326 MW, which would be more than 75 percent of the 3,000 MW goal proposed in Tobin’s Arizona Energy Modernization Plan. According to the information provided to stakeholders by ITC Holdings Corp., the project would be able to store up to 26,000 acre-feet of closed-system water and deliver 20,000 megawatt hours (MWh) at times when electricity is the most expensive to consumers. This is enough to power 3 million homes for four hours. “This project will allow our state to better harness the potential of solar resources and put them to use during expensive peak hours,” said Tobin. “It will also bring billions of dollars and thousands of jobs to the state while helping us avoid the need to build costly new generation facilities. Overall, these types of projects will be major wins for ratepayers in Arizona.” For info http://azcc.gov.

PC Larry Sorenson: Thanks again for your communication. This is the best effort at reaching the PC's that any of us have ever seen. With the mail-in ballot in full swing, the recent accusations flying between candidates may not affect the outcome at all. Right now I believe that the fate of the election is already decided in the recorders’ office mail. In the event that an accusation turns out to be true, we will simply live with the outcome until the next election. There may be some validity to the idea of a short term temporary appointment in light of the proximity to the general election. We taxpayers are out over a million bucks and may forever question our votes.

Chris Brant, 2nd VP and Booth Chairman, reports that it was a huge success; a large number of volunteers, many candidates getting signatures for petitions and meeting and greeting, voter registrations, “new member” outreach for the club. A final tally of the political survey will be forthcoming, but Chris reports that people were standing in line to take the survey. The mood was very positive. Only one negative incident reported. One person from the neighboring Dem booth wanted to start an argument. And he couldn’t keep up with the constant stream of “happy” Republican taking over the entire area. The American Freedom Alliance (AF) Team: Today was the day of the CD8 House Special Election to elect nominees from both parties to run again on April 24, 2018 to win the seat in Congress. The winner of the Republican election with 36% of the vote is Debbie Lesko. Following her were Steve Montenegro with 24% despite the revelation late in the early voting period that he is engaged in his own swamp activity with a woman not his wife. Montenegro enjoyed the endorsements of Congressman Franks himself, Sen. Ted Cruz and Sheriff Arpiao. Coming in third was "I was the first Legislator to Support Trump"Phil Lovas, also known as the McCain candidate. He grabbed 23% of the vote with 100% of the votes counted. LD13 State Senate candidate Brent Backus: Cruelly to animals is a sin. The AZ Senate just passed SB 1295 by a vote of 16-13 on Feb 26, 2018. The bill makes cruelly to animals a class 5 felony. SB1295 now goes to the house for approval. Who would not want to vote for this bill that prohibits a person from intentionally or knowingly subjecting a domestic animal to cruel mistreatment? My opponent Sine Kerr, of Buckeye, the short term unelected State Senator from LD 13 voted against this bill along with 12 other State Senators. Look at the voting record and you can decide who must visit the Humane Society to view abused pets, or sit down with a grieving family who lost a loved pet to cruel treatment from a human being. Senate candidate Dr Kelli Ward: Leading the progressives in Congress, Rep. Nancy Pelosi recently revealed one of her border security solutions... trimming the grass between the U.S. and Mexico. CD3 Sergio Arellano: How much do you make Raul? Earlier this month, my good friend Terry Mendoza asked House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi, "How much do you make Nancy?" Terry's question stumped the hapless "Leader." If we were to ask Congressman Raul Grijalva how much he makes, the honest response would have to be: 'A lot more than my constituents.' Terry asked the question of Pelosi during a Phoenix town hall featuring Pelosi and Grijalva. The two representatives were bashing the tax reforms passed by Congress this year. Pelosi has dismissed the bonuses that resulted from the tax cuts as "crumbs." They might be crumbs to a multi-millionaire, but for the people of Grijalva's CD3, those crumbs represent opportunity. You see, after Grijalva called for a boycott of his own people, we were all left with nothing but crumbs. CD3 is home to the eighth poorest metropolitan area in the country thanks to Grijalva's boycott. The results of his boycott are still felt today. Because of the boycott, the unemployment rate in CD3 is one of the highest in the country. Too many of Grijalva's constituents can't yet see the benefits of tax reform because they have yet to find employment. At the same time the people of CD3 were struggling to live off crumbs, Grijalva was doling out "hush money" in order to make a complaint by a female staffer go away. The female staffer had complained that he had created a "hostile workplace." Thanks to Grijalva's boycott, the people of CD3 know what it is like to work in a Grijalva-created hostile workplace. Grijalva may not be the wealthiest member of Congress, but he has done a lot to ensure that his people remain some of the poorest in the country. Still optimism remains high and the people of CD3 are ready for new leadership. They are ready for a change. I represent that change. I have confidence that the people of CD3 are looking for a fresh face and a selfless leader. I am that man. We are running a grassroots no-frills campaign. Already I and my volunteers are spanning out across the vast CD3 collecting signatures, hosting meet-and-greets, as well as talking to our neighbors about common sense solutions and common dreams. As I would often tell my fellow infantrymen, "We can do this. We will survive. We can win this!"
