backus 6LD13 Senate candidate Brent Backus: On June 8, 2018 we filed Don Shooter LD13 Sena complaint in the Superior Court of Arizona in Maricopa County against Don Shooter to seek special action and permanent injunctive relief. The challenge is to his nomination petition pursuant to A.R.S. 16-351. In short, the defendant Don Shooter is not a resident of Legislative District 13 and therefore is ineligible to run for Senate from that district and ineligible to have his name placed on the primary election ballot. In behalf of the voters in LD 13 and especially the women voters, Don, your charades are over. It is time for new leadership and direction in LD13 and I am leading that charge now. WASHINGTON GIVETH, ARIZONA TAKETH AWAY

Q: When is a tax cut not a tax cut?

A: When the federal government cuts income taxes allowing hardworking Americans to keep more of their own money; but state lawmakers ignore the consequences of tax changes so the bulk of those “savings” ends up going to the state.

The greatly anticipated and almost unprecedented Trump tax cut of 2018 has already been a boon to us regular folks as most Americans have seen a healthy increase in our paycheck each month. Many have been experiencing anywhere from $50 per month to over $400 per month—not including any pay raises—that’s just the result of another Trump-kept promise to get more money into the hands of American families and jump-start the American economic turnaround. You know—that “Make America Great Again” thing the Left hates so much.

But when state legislative leaders fail to do their work—just how much of that tax cut are we really going to get to keep? Maybe not much. A whole bunch of it is expected to end up in state coffers because leaders, like outgoing House Speaker J.D. Mesnard, failed to address the connection between federal income taxes and state income taxes. While Mesnard found the time to kick old, poor people out of their homes by holding up the vote ‘til late on SB1268 resulting in its failure, he couldn’t find the time to even discuss the needed changes in state tax policy for Arizonans to keep more of their tax cut money.

According to the Arizona Department of Revenue, the state expects a windfall of over $230 Million in 2019 and closer to $300 million in 2020 if state tax policies aren’t changed. Those policies were not changed during the recently ended 2018 legislative session, despite the fact that we all knew the tax cuts were scheduled to begin this year. It wasn’t a surprise—it was in all the news.

Short of a Special Session this year to correct the problem, the State of Arizona will reach into workers’ pockets and reap hundreds of millions of dollars.

Mesnard claims to be a policy wonk, but he failed miserably to shepherd any legislation that would address the needed state changes to keep Trump’s tax cut money in our hands. Maybe this is how he planned to pay for his quick caving to #RedforEd—by doing nothing. Where’s the leadership? - A. Hamilton

john mccain 2U.S. Senator John McCain (R-AZ), Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, released the following statement yesterday on President Trump’s suggestion that Russia be readmitted to the Group of Seven (G-7) nations: “Vladimir Putin chose to make Russia unworthy of membership in the G-8 by invading Ukraine and annexing Crimea. Nothing he has done since then has changed that most obvious fact. Every day, Russian-led separatist forces are killing Ukrainians in the Donbass. Every day, Putin's forces are helping the Assad regime slaughter the Syrian people. And every day, through assassinations, cyber-attacks, and malign influence, Russia is assaulting democratic institutions all over the world. The President has inexplicably shown our adversaries the deference and esteem that should be reserved for our closest allies. Those nations that share our values and have sacrificed alongside us for decades are being treated with contempt. This is the antithesis of so-called ‘principled realism’ and a sure path to diminishing America’s leadership in the world.”

Andy BiggsCongressman Andy Biggs: The House passed H.R. 3, the Spending Cuts to Expired and Unnecessary Programs Act to cut nearly $15 billion in appropriated – but unspent – federal funds. Biggs voted to approve the package and issued the following statement: “While spending reductions are encouraging, it pales in comparison to the cuts required to balance our budget and eliminate our national debt. A little is better than nothing; however, Congress should never have put itself in this position again by passing the $1.3 trillion omnibus bill. President Trump said he would never sign a bill like the omnibus again, and I hope Congress heeds his warning. We must protect our grandchildren from a ruinous economic fate and rein in our reckless spending habits.”

Martha McSally 3U.S. Representative Martha McSally successfully included an amendment with significant wins for Arizona veterans to the Military Construction and Veterans Affairs Appropriations Act 2019 in the late hours of Thursday evening. The amendment will ensure that $225 million in Veterans Affairs’ medical services funds are set aside for suicide prevention in fiscal year 2019. “Veterans make up less than 9 percent of the U.S. population--yet, veteran suicides account for 18 percent of all suicides in America. After adjusting for differences in age and sex, that puts the risk of suicide at 22 percent higher for veterans than for civilian adults,” McSally said. “It is not enough to simply talk about studies and statistics and hope for the best. Lip service will not save lives. For the over 500,000 veterans that call Arizona home, this can be a life or death issue. Today and every day, on average, 20 veterans take their own lives. Twenty of my fellow warriors--20 heroes; 20 loved ones; sons, daughters, mothers, fathers--20 vets who often survive combating the enemy in conflict only to come home and take their own lives. Mr. Speaker, this is unacceptable. When they raise their right hand and take an oath that they are willing to defend our freedoms with their lives, we have a covenant that we’ve got their back, and we are going to give them everything they need.” The Military Construction and Veterans Affairs Appropriations Act provides $8.6 billion for VA mental health programs. Upon being signed into law, this legislation will also require VA to provide a detailed report of its plan for spending these funds on suicide prevention outreach programs, like the Veterans Crisis Hotline, to the House Committee on Appropriations. The Act passed the House on Friday by a vote of 235-179.

Martha McSally 2013Congresswoman Martha McSally: The Right to Try Act is Law!, President Trump recently signed the Right to Try Act into law. This legislation, which I supported, gives terminally ill patients a fighting chance and the hope they deserve. The Right to Try Act is already inspiring hope. I encourage you to check out this recent story from KOLD: "Tucson man battling rare cancer applauds President Trump for 'Right to Try Act."

sandra dowling 2Dr. Sandra E. Dowling has announced her candidacy for the Republican Primary In Arizona’s 08 Congressional District.  As a first step towards ballot qualification, I have submitted more than 3,000 signatures to Secretary of State Michele Reagan. As I went through the signature gathering process the response from voters has been overwhelming.  I want to thank them for their confidence and for their encouragement.  It is clear after the special election that Arizonans want a choice in candidates.  After the divisive special election, Republicans want a candidate who will restore integrity, civility, and common sense.   Over the course of the next few months, I will focus on the issues that voters in Arizona really care about including Social Security, illegal immigration, infrastructure and Veterans’ affairs.  It is my hope to restore confidence that our elected leadership is representing the people of Arizona and not corporate lobbyists or special interests.  As a United States Marine and a teacher, I love serving my country and I am fiercely dedicated to the great people of Arizona.  More can be done and more should be done.  I am running for Congress on a principled conservative platform that puts Arizonans first and political insiders last. My campaign will be about Arizonans...their families, their jobs, and their future. With their support, I know we can bring Arizona the conservative values and strong ethics back to Congress! Clair Van Steenwyk 2LD22 Senate candidate Clair Van Steenwyk: AZ’s Citizens Clean Elections Commission is sponsoring an LD 22 Candidate Forum on June 13 at the Hampton Inn 14783 West Grand Ave. Surprise, AZ 85374, the event doors will Open @ 5:30 PM, and as a candidate for the LD 22 senate seat I’m looking forward to answering any and all questions from the voter before, during and after the forum. I hope to see all the residents of LD 22 and especially those from SCW, SCG, Surprise, Vistancia, Glendale and Peoria. I hope that we’ll be able to give all who attend enough information to make clear decisions as to who to vote for vs. just continuing to allow incumbents to either regain the offices they hold or be promoted. It’s important that the voters know who those running have voted on issues such as the National Popular Vote, PROP 123, Red 4 Ed, and of course the EPCOR issue for the SCW voters is especially important and still and issue as EPCOR continues to insist on more consolidation which most know will eventually lead to higher rates for all of us who happen to be unfortunate enough to do business with this company owned by the Community of Edmonton. http://vote4van.com/

Kelli Ward - physician 2US Senate candidate Kelli Ward: Drawing new attention to Congresswoman Martha McSally and Senator Jeff Flake's similar records in Washington, the Ward for Senate campaign today released its new digital ad, "Worse," highlighting McSally's hostility toward President Trump during the 2016 election, her opposition to building a border wall, and her abysmal legislative record as rated by conservative scorecards.
In a statement, Eric Beach, chief strategist for the Ward campaign, notes McSally's rating among conservative organizations and her effort to rebrand herself as a conservative for the midterm elections. "When it comes time to choose between the interests of the American people and the swamp, Martha McSally will always choose the swamp," said Beach. "McSally's opposition to the America First agenda is clear in her F-rated scorecard reports from leading conservative organizations including FreedomWorks, Conservative Review, and Heritage Action. Additionally, she refuses to say if she voted for President Trump in 2016 and is weak on supporting the President's signature campaign promise: a wall along our southern border. As Arizonans get to know her, it's becoming clear Martha McSally is simply an incarnation of Jeff Flake."The Ward ad highlights the similarities in McSally and Flake's liberal records, their refusal to support President Trump during the 2016 campaign; their opposition to building a border wall; and their habit of talking conservative back home but then siding with the swamp in Congress." See ad here.
