Congressman Paul introduced H.R. 6268, Preventing Unionization of Revenue Service Employees (PURSE) Act. If enacted, the legislation would help ensure that IRS employees carry out the mission of the agency, not the mission of labor unions. “The Supreme Court ruling against mandatory union dues was a major step in the right direction towards ensuring taxpayer dollars aren’t forced to subsidize political activities. In line with this major win for the American taxpayer, my legislation would be a check against partisanship and union abuse, specifically at the IRS, and would help ensure that the employees within the agency enforce the law with integrity and fairness. Under current law, several federal government agencies are already prohibited from unionizing and entering into collective bargain agreements. Given the everyday functions of the IRS, there is no good reason why the agency shouldn’t also be on this list. This legislation is another step in the right direction toward stopping federal government tax collectors and other bureaucrats from unionizing and entering into collective bargaining agreements at the taxpayer’s expense.”

She’ll go through examples like Jay Datus’ eight panel mural in the former library at the State Capitol and how that came to happen.” Fahlman will chronicle Arizona’s Art History and the emblematic story of the modern West. An authority on the art history of Arizona, her books include New Deal Art in Arizona (2009) and The Cowboy’s Dream: The Mythic Life and Art of Lon Megargee (2002). Tom Jenney: Americans for Prosperity –AZ: Speak now, or forever hold your peace while very bad things happen to the AZ economy…Talking points for writing a ballot pamphlet argument against the big tax hike.  Make sure the word count is under 300 words.  Only your name and your city will be printed in the pamphlet.  If you know people with struggling small businesses, be sure to tell a personal story about why this tax will hurt them and their employees.

YOU MUST SUBMIT YOUR ARGUMENT BY JULY 10.I also have a Power Point from our friends at the AZ Free Enterprise Club with instructions on how to submit your arguments to the Secretary of State’s office.  It’s really easy.  You can now submit everything online, and you don’t need to have it notarized. Here  is the site for submitting arguments. ballotarguments.az.gov/ . It’s only $75 to get your name and your brilliant ideas in front of millions of voters…  Note that if by some gracious miracle this awful proposition does not get enough signatures, you’ll be out the money.  But this tax increase will cost you a whole lot more than that!  - Tom Jenney - Senior Legislative Advisor Americans for Prosperity – AZ tjenney@afphq.org (602) 478-0146

Talking points Against Invest in Ed Initiative

• Would nearly double Arizona’s income tax rate to 9%

• Would give Arizona the 5th highest income tax in the country

• Largest permanent tax increase in Arizona history

• Permanently locks in Arizona’s income tax rates, meaning income taxes will never be able to go down

• Will kill small businesses and drive investment and jobs to other states

• Tax is unfair! Top tax rate for small business will be 9%, top corporate tax rate will be 4.9%

• Full of loopholes. None of the money from the tax is even required to be spent in the classroom

• Includes no reforms or accountability on how money will be spent

• Poorly drafted. Guarantees that low and middle-income taxpayers will face a $200 Million dollar tax increase.

• Drafted in secret and backed by radical special interest groups and labor unions.

ELECTED OFFICALS COMMENTARY

Congressman Andy Biggs voted in favor of HR6157,, the Department of Defense Appropiations Act. He said, "I was pleased to vote in favor of the 2019 Department of Defense Appropriations Act. This legislation supports our ongoing missions to defeat ISIS, enhances our missile defense capabilities, gives our troops another pay raise, and continues to assist with military readiness. I led two vital provisions. The United States will continue to fund the most formidable attack helicopters in the world: the Apache helicopters, which are manufactured in Mesa. We will also fund the National Guard Drug Interdiction Program and Counter-Drug Activities, which are critical to the Arizona National Guard’s efforts to combat illegal drugs and cartels.I look forward to continuing my wholehearted support for our Armed Forces."

Congresswoman Debbie Lesko introduced her first bill (June 28) since being sworn into Congress. H.R. 6259, the Make Education Local Act of 2018, would allow individual states to submit their own education plans, known as a State Management Decision, to the Secretary of Education. After approval by the Department of Education, all federal funding programs would roll into one pot of money for the state to implement their individualized education plan. “Our children are our future, and it is important that each child have access to high-quality education free from Washington mandates,” said Lesko. “Arizonans know their schools better than any bureaucrat. My bill will allow individual states to submit their own education policy plan to the Secretary of Education to free up dollars so funding will go directly to students and teachers instead of being spent to comply with federal regulators. This bill is just the first step in improving and strengthening education in Arizona classrooms. I will continue to work with local leaders and education advocates to do more to improve education for all of our students. We are committed to fixing our entire education system so that it works for each student.” Original cosponsors of H.R. 6259 include Rep. Andy Biggs (AZ-05), Rep. Paul A. Gosar, D.D.S. (AZ-04), Rep. Martha McSally (AZ-02), and Rep. David Schweikert (AZ-06). See video Click here

CANDIDATE COMMENTARY

Editor’s Note: Please keep opinion pieces to 400 words. If extended, they will be subject to editing. Opinions expressed below are not necessarily those of the Briefs. Briefs does not endorse candidates. – ft

Arizona Superintendent of Public Instruction Diane Douglas– Unfortunately, fighting fake news and false political accusations is part of running for office now. Despite the lies, The State Board of Education repealed Common Core in October, 2015 and replaced it with new standards in December, 2016 after a long fight by me to do so. People saying otherwise are calling me, the Board and the Governor liars when the proof it was repealed and replaced is clear.

I also inherited a department long operated by politicians more interested in their next office than running the Arizona Department of Education (ADE). As the only candidate with a financial background, I was able to implement sweeping changes in ADE that not only reduced administrators and staff, but also corrected grants distributions that had been neglected for decades. Under a plan we submitted to the Feds no schools will lose funding and all dollars went for their intended purpose – helping our most vulnerable students.

We were able as a result of revamping our IT systems to implement current year funding, saving the state over $30 million per year. We also improved our grants processes to allow schools to draw down their funding months earlier than in the past; while insuring the amounts are correctly allocated. This can eliminate the need for districts to take short term loans – saving the taxpayers interest expenses. It’s critical to have someone with financial experience when the primary function of the department is to distribute billions in taxpayer dollars.

The bottom line though is the performance of our students. During my time in office, the vast majority of scores have shown improvement. In fact, the recently released AZ Merit results showed that 16 of 18 grade level scores have increased, some significantly. I will continue to focus, not only on draining the swamp and correcting financial practices at the department, but on supporting parents and getting all students the best possible education.

Parents need a variety of educational choices, outstanding teachers in the classroom, and standards that get back to the important basics of education, not social indoctrination. As we now replace our old Science and Social Studies standards we face the same battles against the education establishment and special interest groups that we faced when repealing and replacing Common Core. I look forward to your support as I continue to fight for the children, parents and citizens of Arizona.
