ELECTED OFFICALS COMMENTARY
Arizona Superintendent of Public Instruction Diane Douglas– Unfortunately, fighting fake news and false political accusations is part of running for office now. Despite the lies, The State Board of Education repealed Common Core in October, 2015 and replaced it with new standards in December, 2016 after a long fight by me to do so. People saying otherwise are calling me, the Board and the Governor liars when the proof it was repealed and replaced is clear. I also inherited a department long operated by politicians more interested in their next office than running the Arizona Department of Education (ADE). As the only candidate with a financial background, I was able to implement sweeping changes in ADE that not only reduced administrators and staff, but also corrected grants distributions that had been neglected for decades. Under a plan we submitted to the Feds no schools will lose funding and all dollars went for their intended purpose – helping our most vulnerable students.
We were able as a result of revamping our IT systems to implement current year funding, saving the state over $30 million per year. We also improved our grants processes to allow schools to draw down their funding months earlier than in the past; while insuring the amounts are correctly allocated. This can eliminate the need for districts to take short term loans – saving the taxpayers interest expenses. It’s critical to have someone with financial experience when the primary function of the department is to distribute billions in taxpayer dollars.
The bottom line though is the performance of our students. During my time in office, the vast majority of scores have shown improvement. In fact, the recently released AZ Merit results showed that 16 of 18 grade level scores have increased, some significantly. I will continue to focus, not only on draining the swamp and correcting financial practices at the department, but on supporting parents and getting all students the best possible education.
Parents need a variety of educational choices, outstanding teachers in the classroom, and standards that get back to the important basics of education, not social indoctrination. As we now replace our old Science and Social Studies standards we face the same battles against the education establishment and special interest groups that we faced when repealing and replacing Common Core. I look forward to your support as I continue to fight for the children, parents and citizens of Arizona.
Congressman Paul Gosar: Saying No To Amnesty-I voted to prevent the course of history from repeating itself and opposed one of the largest amnesty bills in our country's history. The root of the problem with the Border Security and Immigration Reform Act, better known as the 'compromise' bill, is the same as last week’s bill -- it grants amnesty. We cannot compromise our country's future by creating a special path for those not willing to wait in line. Under this bill, it is estimated that millions of illegal aliens would become eligible for legal status. I will continue to stand strong and fight to secure our borders and uphold the rule of law. The only pathway to achieving the American dream is by abiding by the laws of our sovereign nation. No amnesty. Click here to read more
CANDIDATE COMMENTARY
Editor’s Note: Please keep opinion pieces to 400 words. If extended, they will be subject to editing. Opinions expressed below are not necessarily those of the Briefs. Briefs does not endorse candidates. – ft
House candidate Stuart McDaniel: Early ballots go out on August 1st and I need your help! Please consider making a donation today. I need all the help and support to fight for conservative values in rural Arizona. Over the last week, I've received new endorsements and have been busy in our community! In case you missed it, I was on KAFF Country radio to discuss the campaign and legislative priorities. You can listen here You can also hear me on The Big Talker with Jeff Oravits at 97.1FM, Live streaming here Our new yard signs are in! If you are interested in displaying a sign, please contact me at info@mcdanielforhouse.com. Thank you!
LD13 House candidate Joanne Osborne: As the campaign heats up so does the Arizona summer weather. Your Grandpa may have walked five miles up hill, back and forth to school, in the snow... but, I walked barefoot, during the summer on the sidewalks of Phoenix! Shade is a luxury in the Valley and a simple way to capture more of it is to adopt a Joanne Osborne yard sign which can provide up to 6 square feet of new shade for your front yard. But Arizona summers can cause serious problems for hikers, homeless populations and seniors. And remember never leave kids or pets in parked cars. So, here are some tried and true tricks for beating the Arizona summer days. Some are my own, some you have probably seen around, but all-in-all there just might be a refreshing idea below!
· Stay Hydrated – water is best. Diet products and alcohol can be dehydrating.
· Check on your fellow man! Family, neighbors, friends, and strangers.
· Keep water and towels in your car. Cover steering wheels, seats, and definitely baby seats. Use window shades.
· Check the water in your car’s battery and other liquids
· Take care of the pets – you cannot walk barefoot, so your pets can’t walk on sidewalks or streets. Give them plenty of shade and water – better yet, bring them inside!
· Do not leave your loved ones inside a vehicle when not running and air on!
· Fuel up your vehicle in the evening – helps with our ozone
· Move the thermostat to 78 – 80 degrees for the day and 76 – 77 at night.
· Water your plants and grass when the sun has gone down.
· Take care of your pool – the heat eats up the chemicals.
WEAR YOUR SUNSCREEN!
· Fun snack – Freeze grapes, some people even roll them in kool-aid first for a sweet treat.
Donate water to your local hospital, churches, or food bank. Many cities will take water donations too.
Wear cotton clothing.
· Extreme heat can cause tire blowouts. Heat is your tire's worst enemy. The hotter a tire gets, the higher the risk of failure. In summer heat conditions as the pavement temperatures soar, it's important to regularly check air pressure.
CD 9 candidate Dave Giles: This week I had the opportunity to attend, and participate in many events in Congressional District 9. These events include: Speaking at Rio Salado College, the Mid-Summer Mixer, the Ahwatukee Republican Women and numerous of small businesses. Contact: dave@davegilesforcongress.com 480-664-4971
Gubernatorial candidate Ken Bennett is running for Governor because he believes the truth matters. This week Governor Ducey shows an approval rate of only 31% (Emerson College) which is extremely low and means he can be beaten. Probably why he is running all those TV spots telling you how wonderful he is and how much he has done for you. (Taking credit for President Trump's work.) He will not be telling you that he broke every campaign promise he made on issues very important to Arizona.
· He caved to #RedForEd: “Ducey was Gov. Milquetoast during the strike, seeking to co-opt and appease, not to confront and thwart. The first significant act of public employee militancy in these parts in recent memory produced results. Expect more of it.” - Robert Robb
· He does not care what Republicans think about his terrible STOP plan that includes seizing guns and has promised to call a Special Session to get it. This plan fails to keep our schools safe and is simply a step towards gun control. “Undeterred by opposition from his own party, Gov. Doug Ducey is determined to … ask judges to take guns away from people who are a danger to themselves or others others – assuming he’s still governor…”
· He has a plan to appoint Cindy McCain to the Senate seat because he does not support the repeal of Obamacare.
· He has done nothing to secure the border. "Border Patrol union President Brandon Judd has stated: " ... National Guard deployment 'colossal waste'"
· He raised your taxes. “In fact, Ducey ended up raising taxes. … Ducey will claim that it is a fee, so doesn’t count as a violation of his “no tax increase” pledge. … But, through various accounting contortions, more than $100 million of it ends up improving the status of the general fund, by relieving costs and increasing revenues, just as a general tax hike would.”
