AzFRW President Loraine Bennett Pellegrino: The Arizona chapter of Americans for Prosperity urges the citizens of Arizona to vote NO on the state’s income tax hike proposal, the so-called “Invest in Education” proposal. This proposition would turn Arizona into a high-tax state, hurt our state’s small business owners, and put teacher pay in jeopardy. It would be the largest permanent tax increase in Arizona history, making Arizona’s top income tax rate the fifth-highest in the country and the highest in the Southwest region. NOTES FROM READERS
Opinions expressed by readers are not necessarily those of the Briefs. Briefs does NOT endorse pre-primary candidates. Comments running over 400 words are subject to editing. Please include your phone number with your submission for verification of author purposes. – ft
Yavapai County Activist Jim Dutton: Great letter Randy. If only these guys would listen to reason. Like Joe Arpaio who needs to drop out of this race. He fails to see that by staying in he is only hurting President Trump by ensuring that Martha McSally gets elected. I guess ego take over for some of these guys and common sense and logic move to last place. Editor’s Note: Dutton is referring to Randy Miller’s letter in the 8-3-18 Briefs regarding LD21 Senate candidate Rick Gray’s alleged lack of knowledge on the National Popular Vote and his lack of understanding of the constitution.-ft
Radio Talk Show Hostess Alice Lara: I try to scan the relevant articles you provide at the end of the Briefs. I hope your readers noticed the story on the 1000 AZ Motor Vehicle Crash Deaths in 2017. See full report 2017-crash-facts That one is FACEBOOK shareworthy! Muchas Gracias for all you do!
Activist Rosemary Hansen: We appreciate your coverage and are so pleased you are back online.
Activist Timothy Schwartz: Jim O'Connor is running for a seat on Arizona's Corporation Commission. He's a conservative with a professional résumé that clearly makes him a stand-out for the job. Check out his Issues page in which he decisively defines his objectives. Foremost among its many duties, the Arizona Corporation Commission regulates utility rates. Integrity, which has been lacking in this important commission, is the paramount consideration. There is no question O'Connor posses that key quality. Running as a Clean Elections candidate, he refuses to take campaign contributions from utilities or those associated with them.O'Connor is also uniquely accessible, posting his contact information on his website. In a crowd field of candidates competing for two seats on the Arizona Corporation Commission, it's clear why he's scored big, winning an endorsement from Arizona's conservative former congressman and media commentator, J.D. Hayworth.
Nancy Russell Plencner, Fountain Hills AZ: For months now our United State's SeniorSenator John McCain has been unable to fulfill a critical part of his Senatorial duties of casting votes on the floor of the US Senate. And now our Junior Senator Jeff Flake, who always dutifully followed McCain's lead, is romping around Africa unable to be present in the Senate to vote on critical judge appointments. Our two Arizona Senators alone have driven the balance in the Senate with their absenteeism down to 49 Republicans vs 47 Democrats! Blessedly Flake's replacement will be installed in January and given the terrible odds of McCain's diagnosis we might have a replacement prior to January....but in the meantime, Arizona has no voice and no vote in the US Senate. But rest assured our two fine Senators are regularly collecting their paychecks. McCain not stepping aside months ago for a Republican appointee who could be in DC voting and representing Arizonans, and Flake conveniently being out of the country and not in DC to vote on the President's key appointments is just another blatant anti-Trump tactic no different than the way they both acted when Trump was running for President. Even after he won the Primary both of our Republican Senators did everything they could to derail the Trump candidacy and then his Presidency. How pathetic! Both Arizona Senators should step down immediately.
Former PC Wayne Blair: Wish Rachel Alexander would have went one step further and said - Joe Arpaio is only in the race to defuse Dr. Kelli Wards run so that TRAITOR J. McCain can still control the race and get McSally elected in FAKE Flake seat. So in essence, Joe Arpaio is a RINO and going along with McCains goal. He is and has been.
Activist Duane Loftus: Oh my gosh – I must be a terrible person!I just received my 2nd call from Aaron. Aaron (a recorded voice) claims to be a firefighter and is asking for donations to their fireman’s “political fund”. He goes on to say that they support politicians that help “protect” you - and they also support widows and orphans. How can anyone turn away from this? The problem is that it is extremely deceptive. It is a PAC that is collecting money for chosen (by the Union) politicians that they will provide funds to. In fact, my brother’s opponent for the state senate (LD-20) is one of those “chosen”. He has received over $40,000 from PACs, significantly the “Firefighter’s Union”. PAC money is over 75% of his Campaign income. Individual donations are under 25%. Which do you think he represents? On the other hand, mybrotherLD20 senate candidate Charlie Loftus, a 36 year law enforcement veteran, a fraud and corruption investigator, a Ph.D. in Public Administration and is one of the most ethical people you’ll meet. He’s also not a political insider. Does integrity count?Your vote. Your choice.
Lea Marquez Peterson, former small business owner, current President of the Tucson Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and Republican candidate for Congress announced today that she has received the endorsement of former U.S Senator Jon Kyl in her race for Arizona’s 2nd Congressional District. “I am proud to endorse Lea Marquez Peterson in her race for Congressional District 2. Lea has been a leading voice for Southern Arizona's small businesses and a passionate advocate for her community” said Senator Kyl. “Lea's work with the Tucson Hispanic Chamber of Commerce has been remarkable and it speaks volumes about her ability to get results. I know Lea will put her constituents first and will serve them well in Congress". “I’m extremely honored to have the endorsement of Senator Kyl” said Peterson. “His steadfast leadership and common-sense conservative ideals have played a major role in shaping our state and country for the better. Senator Kyl remains highly respected and I look forward to continuing his legacy of solving problems and bringing results to Southern Arizona”.
LD30 activist Timothy Schwartz: Arizona Republicans locked in fierce three-way battle to replace Jeff Flake in the Senate. Fox News: The race to replace retiring U.S. Senator Jeff Flake has two right wing conservatives, possibly weakening each other, and a more moderate candidate whose own supporters worry she may be courting President Trump too much. Read the full story
Activist Ron Gosselin:Like charity, open borders should begin at home. People who don’t want a wall and call for open borders should dismantle their security systems and take the locks off their doors. Seriously, I think the recent border hysteria is being whipped up by Obama, the Clintons and crew who are getting spooked by all the FBI revelations, and are afraid of what will come out if Rod Rosenstein is no longer there to hold the lid down but is replaced by someone like Guiliani or Christie.
Author Tom Morrissey: More fact, and like it came right out of the fictional "The Way Of The Shadow Wolves". Eerie My-Encounter-With-The-Deep-And-I-Am-Lucky-To-Be-AliveEditor’s Note: Morrissey is the former AZGOP Chairman. - ft
Drake Mitchell, Chairman Arizona Citizens Defense League PAC: “The Arizona Citizens Defense League PAC is happy to endorse Ken Bennett for Governor. Ken Bennett's School Safety Operation Plan is the best option that has been proposed to stop an attack once it has started and to harden our schools to keep our children safe. Ken Bennett has made a strong pro-rights, pro-constitutional stand that will protect all Arizonan's.
LD20 Brad Anderson: Here we go again, Republican legislators missing work and surrendering your rights! Each election we talk about electing people who are responsive to their constituents, share the views of the people who elect them and we talk about cleaning out the swamp. Then we go and reelect the same old career politicians. We grumble then do nothing to change. And those we reelect pursue their own self-serving agenda and not the agenda of those who elected them. Whose fault is this? It is ours. But we blame it on the established politician’s “power base” and say we are unable to change that. Our system of government gives people the power to change that, but if the people blindly follow the same old road, change will never occur and the swamp continues to gain power - both nationally and locally. We have some “good” politicians in office and we should support them because they support us. But we also have some politicians who serve themselves. Remember, we elected them to represent us! We need people who represent us and our values – not their personal interests. Our state legislature is critical to the welfare and prosperity of us and our children. Consider this. These are people who, in my opinion, violated the trust and representation we elected them for. Now they want us to reelect them so they can do it over and over sometimes for greed.
Absent: Some of our elected find it too difficult to even show up to do the job we elected them for. (source – Arizona Republic). Republicans like Heather Carter missed 10 days for family issues and sickness while Paul Boyer missed seven sessions and was late many more because his second job interfered with his legislative duties. I expect this self-serving behavior from Democrats.
Voting Record:
· Boyer – supported NPV to remove conservatives (and rural areas like Arizona) from being able to elect a president. He also blocked legislation that gave parents choice in their child’s education and blocked anti-corruption measures with the schools.
· While Carter did not support the NPV to remove conservatives from being able to elect a president. Paul Boyer found his way to vote yes to strip you and Arizona of this right.
I’m sure if you dig deeper you’ll find other reasons and other people. But it’s time we voted with our minds and not our routine
LD22 Senate candidate Clair Van Steenwyk: Can AZ Really Be Bought by RINOs? We all had better hope & pray history doesn't repeat itself. I read the Briefs this morning as usual 8-2-18 Briefs archives - Common Sense and couldn’t help but notice once again a personal attack against me endorsing my opponent in LD 22 Senate Race, so for any who read it here’s the one part I’m referring to at this point. For those who don’t know or for that matter don’t care what the definition of perennial is, I thought it might be a good time to post it so all can see it’s actually more of a compliment than I’m certain they’d care to give me, Defintion: Perennial: lasting or existing for a long or apparently infinite time; enduring or continually recurring. Defintion synonyms: abiding, enduring, lasting, everlasting, perpetual, eternal, continuing, unending, unceasing, never-ending, endless, undying, ceaseless, persisting, permanent, constant, continual, unfailing, unchanging, never-changing. My Comments and definition demonstrate that endorsements must be taken with a grain of salt. It appears the American Post – Gazette prefers someone who voted for the National Popular Vote, PROP 123 and Red for Ed over me, who’d Never Vote 4 the NPV violating their Oath of Office to Protect and Defend the U.S. Constitution Article 4 Section 4, and the others mentioned violate AZ State Statutes.
I’ve received several large mailers from outside groups endorsing my opponent and wonder why anyone would spend so much money to get a $24,000 a yr. job, I believe these votes in the past indicates his future votes, as we've all learned he takes orders from at least one lobbyist and will again as do others.I’d like all of AZ to know I’ll never Vote for anyone who supported or Voted 4 the National Popular Vote or anyone who runs with them or endorses them in any election cycle, as when you check some of the endorsers they to supported the National Popular Vote, for if it had been law we’d have had Lying Hillary and the U.S. would never have recovered from two Socialists in a Row in the White House. This is for All AZ Voters, many in the GOP Legislature Voted 4 the NPV and so check their Records before you Vote 4 them, especially in LD's 20,21 and 22.
Sahuarita Councilman Bill Bracco: “The people of southern Arizona, like me, are ready for a fresh face to represent us. Sergio has been a breath of fresh air while serving on Sahuarita’s Parks and Recreation Commission. He fearlessly embraces his core principles while taking the time to listen to all stakeholders. His down-to-earth demeanor puts everyone at ease so they feel welcome and comfortable to express their concerns, and ask their questions. As a public servant in Sahuarita, I know the frustration of the people, who feel like some of our national representatives don’t represent us. With Sergio in D.C., I believe the people of CD3 will finally have a powerful voice. While the rest of the state has had representation determined to address the needs of Arizonans, the people of CD3 have done without. Sergio can and will change that.”

Southern AZ And--Just For Laughs--Tucson Districts
Looking at Districts 2, 3, 4, 9, 10, and 11 Recommendations in BOLD . But first a correction. In yesterday’s post in District 5, REGINA COBB was recommended for re-election to the House. Her name was capitalized but not BOLD, so for clarification purposes: Apologies to Ms. Cobb; she is a patriot and deserves your support. Now on to today’s postIn Arizona’s liberal enclave of Pima County, there are a few Republicans brave enough to go where angels fear to tread. Since so many folks in the state’s second most populated county want to embrace open borders and socialism/communism, it has been suggested we just grant everything south of the Gila River (or at least Pima County) back to Mexico. But there is one solid GOP district (11) and two (2 & 10) that should be at least a mixed bag if not all blue.
In District 2 incumbent Democrat Senator Andrea Dalessandro is running for re-election. If just for the sake of some sanity at the Capitol, hopefully either Republicans Shelly Kais or BOBBY WILSON, both of conservative Green Valley, can send the liberal packing. If you’ve ever watched a Senate Floor Session and had to listen to Ms. Dalessandro, you will know what I mean. On the House side, Republicans have two very credible candidates running to oust the two incumbent liberals. Former House member JOHN CHRISTOPHER ACKERLY and newcomer ANTHONYSIZER both have a chance to turn the district all blue. Democrat incumbents Rosanna Gabaldon and Daniel Hernandez are blind followers of anything Democrat leadership dishes out. Mr. Hernandez’s only claim to fame is holding former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords in his arms as she lay wounded from the attempted assassination on her life. That’s a kindly thing but not a qualification for public office. But Democrats have demonstrated an affection for chubby interns.
Tucson Districts 3 and 4 are so solid red even Karl Marx would be embarrassed at the excess. No Republicans are running in either district for any of the offices.
District 9 is in the Belly of the Beast. Happily, current Senator Steve Farley is leaving to run for governor. He will lose and sadly Mr. Farley will be back in the Legislature in two years. Two equally liberal Democrat candidates are running to replace him. Pick your poison: Jim Love or Victoria Steele. Republican write-in RANDY FLEENOR is at least trying to challenge the status quo. We wish him well. In the House, ANA HENDERSON, a small business owner, is running unopposed in the Republican Primary. Two incumbent liberal Democrats (yes, we know that’s redundant) are running for re-election. Pamela Powers Hannley is a self-described “Progressive Democrat.” At least she’s honest. Randy Friese is a walking regurgitator of liberal nonsense.
There’s a real opportunity for Republicans in District 10. Democrat incumbent Senator David Bradley is running for re-election The likeable but very liberal Mr. Bradley has been earning his keep by working for non-profits that get much of their money from--you guessed it--the government. Nothing like feathering your own nest. Democrats complain when they claim Republicans do that, but turn a blind eye when their buddies do the same. Challenging him come November is small business owner and certified government financial manager Republican MARILYN WILES. With Republican House incumbent patriot TODD CLODFELTER running for re-election, it’s possible to take two of the three seats in November. Democrat House incumbent Kirsten Engle is about as wacky an environmentalist you will ever meet. She is joined in the Democrat Primary by three challengers; hopefully one of them will send her to the woods to go hug a tree.
District 11 is solid GOP, led by uber patriot-warrior MARK FINCHEM running for re-election to the House. Current House member and patriot VINCE LEACH is running for the Senate seat vacated by Congressional hopeful STEVE SMITH. Joining the conservative team to run for the House is BRET ROBERTS, currently a Pinal County Constable and active in community and political circles.
That’s the end of the Legislative Primary recommendations and non-recommendations.Thanks for playing. - S. Adams

CANDIDATE COMMENTARY
Editor’s Note: Please keep opinion pieces to 400 words. If extended, they will be subject to editing. Opinions expressed below are not necessarily those of the Briefs. Briefs does not endorse candidates. – ft
AZ Corporation Commission candidate Jim O’Connor: The 2018 Primary Election is upon us. On August 1st those of us on the Permanent Early Voting List (PEVL), and that is approximately 75% of all registered voters in AZ, began receiving our ballots via USPO mail. The remaining 25% of us will vote at our polling location on Election Day, August 28th.Looking back at past elections, it is anticipated that fewer than 35% of registered voters will determine the winner of these Primary races. That means that those of us who do cast a vote enjoy a three to one advantage over those who do not vote. So, one way to look at it that for those voting, your votes count three times. My attempt here is to motivate you, your family and friends to get out and vote for me and for other candidates of your choosing. For each of you who are willing to do a little more to get us elected, I ask that you communicate your choices for those races of interest to as wide a circle of voters as your credibility extends. This word of mouth sharing is viewed by campaign experts as more powerful than political endorsements. When mentioning my name as your choice for AZ Corporation Commission, please note facebook.com/oconnorazThat way the recipients of your email will be able to conveniently look me up and watch videos of my plans and goals for the Commission. Thank you for your participation with me and most importantly your continuing prayers on my behalf.
Senate candidate Steve Smith:Wendy Rogers has been running for office, and losing, for nearly 10 years. Anyone seeing her latest attack on me is reminded why Arizonans have never elected her to anything. Desperate times seem to call for desperate lies and more fake news from Wendy, who claims I oppose a border wall (I don't just support it, I wrote the bill to get it done, and I'm endorsed by the US Border Patrol), that I was a NeverTrumper (I supported Trump, campaigned for Trump, and have been endorsed by top Trump campaign officials because of my support for the President), and now the ugliest attack of the campaign season... Stooping to a new low, she tried to connect the company I work for and it's African-American woman owner to having some kind of connection to pornography. Of course its a complete lie, but what kind of person attacks the reputation of a well-respected, Christian business owner and makes those sorts of accusations just to hurt an employee? At the same time, Wendy Rogers is hiding from debating me because she is scared of being held to account for her longtime support for Jeb Bush instead of Donald Trump, and she doesn't want to have to answer for her dishonest attacks.Wendy Rogers owes everyone an apology, but she's been doing this for almost a decade without apology. I wish Wendy Rogers would find the courage to debate me on the many important issues facing the people of Arizona, but as one voter rightly said, "While voters might learn a lot listening to her at a debate, they can learn everything they need to know about her just knowing she wouldn't show up in the first place."
Gubernatoral candidate Ken Bennett: For too many years we have heard politicians promise to secure our southern border and then nothing happens. The reason nothing happens is money and fear of "political heat". Arizona has a $10 billion budget in a country with a $4 trillion budget, and a military that secures borders across the country - I am calling 'foul'. I am running to be Governor to make Arizona conservative again.I will accept all political consequences butI will not accept any excuses. If we can do it there, we will do it in Arizona.
Bennett's Stop Illegal Activity Plan: The most important responsibility of government is to protect the freedoms of its citizens. My highest priority will be to uphold the laws and Constitutions of the United States and Arizona. That includes securing our southern border, enforcing the laws against hiring illegals and sanctuary cities, and prohibiting illegal entry or overstays.
As Governor,I will work with President Trump and make certain all Arizona governments work with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to secure our border and enforce our immigration laws.I will prioritize funding for the National Guard to stop illegal activity occurring in Arizona. It is simply an excuse to say that we do not have the money. The problem is how your money is being spent and politicians fear the political heat that will occur when action is taken. From Arizona’s budget of over $10 billion and the U.S. budget of over $4 trillion, hundreds of millions of dollars go to combat just one result of illegal activity, the opioid epidemic. Additional billions of dollars go to other consequences of illegal activity including medical expenses, public education, law enforcement, incarcerations, property loss or damage and in some cases free college tuition. By re-prioritizing money to solve these problems, we will decrease the amount of funding necessary to clean up the mess. I will issue guidelines to create agreements and identify sources of funding between the branches of Government and the private sector, currently used by other programs. Successful models will include the Joint Task Force firefighting units where multiple governments agree to use resources, equipment and personnel to fight fires. This cooperative effort will include supporting President Trump in building the wall. We have the best military, police, engineers, and technicians in the world and we secure borders in other countries. I will accept all political consequences but I will not accept any excuses. If we can do it there, we will do it in Arizona.
Problem Solver Kelli Ward video
Supt of Public Instruction Frank Riggs:We’ve just gone up with a new digital ad a failed system, and I wanted you to see it. In this short video, I share my lifelong passion for improving our education system and my motivation for running for Superintendent of Public Instruction. Back during my days in law enforcement, I saw firsthand how poor performing schools would often lead adolescents to become involved in crime. This became my motivation for decades of work in education at the local and national levels – to do everything in my power to ensure every student gets a good education that helps them realize their full, God-given potential. Now that early voting has begun, we are just weeks away from having our Republican nominee for Superintendent of Public Instruction.help me
